Chapter 10 - TIDE AND TRUTHThe sun began its final descent, painting the sky in magnificent strokes of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The bonfire on the beach crackled and popped, casting dancing orange reflections across the wet sand as the tide slowly began to recede, pulling back into the vast, mysterious depths of the ocean.

Carol walked up from the beach, her crutches tapping rhythmically against the wooden steps as she joined her father and Marcus on the porch. She collapsed into the rocking chair with a contented sigh, resting her tired legs.
"Busy day?" David asked gently, handing her a fresh cup of tea.
"Exhausting," Carol grinned, taking a warm sip. "But worth every second. One of the kids, Tyler, caught his first ocean perch today. You should have seen the smile on his face."
"Sounds like you're turning this old beach cabin into quite an empire, kiddo," Marcus joked, standing up and brushing off his suit jacket. "Well, I should get back to the city before the coastal fog rolls in. It was good seeing you both."
"Drive safe, Marcus," David said, shaking the lawyer's hand.
As Marcus's car disappeared down the winding gravel road, silence settled over the cabin once more—not an oppressive, heavy silence like the one that had greeted David on his first night here, but a warm, living silence filled with the music of the sea and the quiet comfort of shared survival.
Carol leaned her head against David’s shoulder.
"Mom would have loved this, wouldn't she?" she whispered.
David wrapped his arm around her, breathing in the scent of lavender and salt air, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the first brilliant stars were beginning to pierce the twilight sky.

"She doesn't have to wish for it, sweetheart," David whispered back, kissing the top of her head. "She helped build it."
Down on the shore, the waves rolled in, gentle and eternal, washing away the old footprints in the sand, leaving behind a clean, pristine shore ready for a brand new dawn.
