Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER IN THE WINDThe evening breeze picked up, carrying the cool, salty tang of the ocean spray across the deck. The wind chimes hanging from the eaves of the cabin chimed in a gentle, melodic rhythm—a sound that David swore sounded remarkably like Helen’s soft laughter when something amused her.

"Do you think she knows?" Carol asked softly, her gaze fixed on the golden horizon where the sun touched the edge of the world. "Do you think Mom is watching us right now?"

David looked down at the small silver necklace resting against his chest—a pendant containing a tiny fraction of Helen’s ashes mixed with sand from the beach where they had first met forty years ago.

"She doesn't have to watch us, sweetie," David said, his voice steady and filled with quiet conviction. "She’s right here. Every time the tide comes in, every time the lavender blooms by the door... she’s right here with us."

Far away, in a cold, sterile federal penitentiary cell behind three-inch-thick glass and reinforced steel, Bradley Miller stared at a blank concrete wall, screaming into a silence that would never answer back.

He had tried to steal an empire, but in the end, he had only succeeded in burying himself alive in a tomb of his own making.

Back at the beach cabin, the lights flickered warmly against the gathering dusk. The front door remained unlocked, the welcoming scent of lavender drifting out into the night air—a sanctuary built on truth, justice, and a love that not even death, greed, or betrayal could ever wash away.
