Chapter 2 - The Invitation to the Lion's Den

Hook: When the hunter thinks they are baiting the trap, but they are already inside the cage.Six days had passed. In the eyes of the Mendoza family, Mariana had vanished off the face of the earth. She hadn't answered a single call from Alejandro, nor had she replied to Sofía’s passive-aggressive Instagram stories about "fake people who pretend to be rich but sleep on public benches."
Doña Leticia was growing frantic. The interest on Sofía’s 3-million-peso loan was due in forty-eight hours. If they didn't make the payment, the bank would begin the foreclosure process on the Del Valle apartment.
"Where is that useless girl?!" Leticia screamed, slamming her teacup down. "Alejandro, did you find her office?"
"She resigned, Mom!" Alejandro said, his voice cracking with panic. "I went to her corporate building, and her HR department said she submitted her resignation letter last Monday. She's gone!"
Just then, Sofía’s phone chimed with a high-priority notification. Her eyes went wide. "Oh my god. Look at this!"
She held up her phone. It was an email invitation from the ultra-exclusive Silva Foundation.
"You are cordially invited to the Annual Charity Gala and Private Art Auction at the Silva Estate in Bosque Real. Dress Code: Black Tie. VIP Admission."
"How did we get this?!" Sofía gasped. "Only the top 1% of Mexico City society gets invited to the Silva Estate! Even the CEO of Alejandro’s company has been trying to get an invitation for years!"
Alejandro grabbed the phone, his heart hammering. "Wait... look at the name on the guest list attachment. 'Alejandro Mendoza and Family.' It was sent directly from the executive office of the Silva Group."
A smug, greedy smile spread across Doña Leticia's face. "Aha! I knew it! Alejandro, your boss must have recommended you to the Silva family. They want to network with you! This is our salvation. If we can rub shoulders with the Silvas, we can secure a private investment, pay off Sofía’s debt, and buy five more apartments!"
"But what about Mariana?" Alejandro asked, a brief flicker of guilt crossing his mind.
"Forget that peasant!" Leticia spat. "She was a mistake. Once we enter the high society of Bosque Real, you can find a real heiress. Dress your best, children. We are going to the big leagues."
The night of the gala arrived.
The Mendoza family rented a luxury Mercedes-Benz using the very last of their credit card limits, desperate to look the part. As they drove through the gates of Bosque Real, Sofía was frantically taking videos for her social media, tagging herself at #BosqueReal #HighSociety #SilvaGala.
When they pulled up to the breathtaking, glass-walled mansion, they were awestruck. The driveway was lined with Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and rolls-Royces. Elegant women in diamond necklaces and men in bespoke tuxedos chatted near the grand entrance.
"Look at this place," Sofía whispered, her eyes green with envy. "The person who owns this must be worth billions."
"And tonight, they are our hosts," Leticia said proudly, adjusting her cheap, knock-off pearl necklace and puffing out her chest. "Walk proud, kids. We belong here."
They walked past the security detail, presenting their VIP digital invitation. The guard scanned it, paused, and looked at them with a strange, knowing expression.
"Ah, the Mendoza family. The hosts have been expecting you. Please, go straight to the grand ballroom," the guard said, gesturing inside.
As they entered the grand ballroom, surrounded by towering crystal chandeliers and priceless modern art, Alejandro spotted his boss, Mauricio, the CEO of Grupo Alianza.
"Mauricio!" Alejandro called out, rushing over to show off. "What an honor to see you here!"
Mauricio turned, looking surprised. "Alejandro? How on earth did you get an invite to the Silva Estate? I had to donate half a million pesos just to get a seat at the back table!"
"Well, you know," Alejandro lied smoothly, wrapping an arm around his mother. "My family has connections. We were invited personally by the owner."
"Is that so?" a cold, familiar voice echoed from behind them.
The Mendoza family froze.
The crowd of wealthy socialites parted, making way for a woman walking down the grand staircase.

She wore an emerald-green silk gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Around her neck was the very gold necklace her godmother had given her—but now, it was paired with a flawless, 20-carat emerald pendant that caught the light of the chandeliers. Her hair was styled perfectly, and her posture was that of a queen.
It was Mariana.
