Chapter 5 - The Smell of Ashes

Hook: Desperation makes people do dangerous things, but greed makes them stupid.Three days later, the Mendoza family was living in a damp, cramped, one-room motel room on the outermost slums of the city.
The contrast was brutal.
There were no designer bags. No luxury cars. No servants. Just the smell of cheap grease, mildew, and the constant sound of police sirens outside.
Leticia lay on the single creaking bed, staring at the ceiling in a catatonic state. All of her pride had been stripped away.
Sofía was sitting on the floor, crying hysterically as she read the comments on her social media. The news of their public humiliation at the Silva Gala had gone viral. Her "friends" had blocked her, and her followers were mocking her with memes of her being dragged out of the mansion.
"It's all over," Sofía sobbed. "I'm ruined. I can't even show my face online."
Alejandro paced the small room like a caged animal. His phone was ringing constantly—not with job offers, but with threats from the loan sharks who had realized he no longer had a corporate salary or a luxury apartment to secure their money.
"We need to get back at her," Alejandro muttered, his eyes bloodshot and wild with desperation. "She ruined my life. She took my job, my home, my dignity. If I'm going down, I'm taking her with me."
"What are you going to do, Alejandro?" Leticia asked, her voice hollow. "She has security. She has millions."
"She has a weak spot," Alejandro sneered, a dark, sinister plan forming in his mind. "Her godmother, Elena. The old woman who gave her that gold necklace. I know where she lives. She lives in a quiet, unguarded house in Coyoacán. If we take her... Mariana will pay whatever we want to get her back."
"Alejandro... that's kidnapping. That's a federal crime," Leticia whispered, though a sick glint of hope sparked in her eyes.
"Do you want to live in this garbage dump for the rest of your life, Mom?!" Alejandro roared. "We have no choice! We get the old woman, we demand 50 million pesos from the Silva estate, and we fly to a country with no extradition. It's our only way out!"
That night, under the cover of darkness, Alejandro and a desperate associate he hired with his last remaining cash crept toward Elena’s quiet, tree-lined street in Coyoacán.
They approached the small, elegant villa. Alejandro climbed over the low stone wall and bypassed the simple lock on the back door.
"Easy money," Alejandro whispered to his accomplice as they slipped inside the dark house.
But as soon as they stepped into the living room, the lights suddenly flashed on, blinding them.
Alejandro gasped, shielding his eyes.
Sitting in an armchair in the center of the room was not a frail, helpless old woman.
May you like
It was Mariana.
And standing behind her were six heavily armed state police officers, their weapons aimed directly at Alejandro’s chest.
