Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal and the Last Laugh

Hook: The final trap was set before they even knew they were playing the game.Alejandro froze, his hands trembling as he slowly raised them in the air. His accomplice immediately dropped to his knees, begging for mercy.
"M-Mariana?" Alejandro stammered, his heart dropping into his stomach. "How... how did you know?"
Mariana stood up slowly, her expression completely devoid of emotion. Behind her, Elena stepped out from the kitchen, safe and sound, holding a cup of tea.
"Did you really think I wouldn't monitor your communications, Alejandro?" Mariana said, tossing a tablet onto the table. It showed a real-time transcript of his phone calls and location tracking. "I knew the moment you contacted your shady associates. I knew the moment you bought the black market burner phones. I've been waiting for you."
"Mariana, please! I was desperate! They were going to kill me!" Alejandro cried, falling to his knees. "The loan sharks... they threatened to cut off my hands! I didn't want to hurt Elena, I swear! I just wanted a way out!"
"You chose your own path, Alejandro," Mariana said coldly. "You chose greed over love. You chose deceit over honesty. And now, you will pay the price."
The lead police officer stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Alejandro’s wrists.
"Alejandro Mendoza, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, breaking and entering, and attempted extortion," the officer declared, pulling him up by his collar.
"Wait! No! Leticia! Sofía! They made me do it!" Alejandro screamed, his survival instinct kicking in as he immediately betrayed his own family. "It was my mother's idea! She wanted the money! Sofía wanted to pay off her loans! Arrest them, not just me!"
Mariana watched him scream and beg, feeling absolutely nothing but disgust.
"Don't worry, Alejandro," Mariana whispered as he was dragged past her. "The police are already at your motel room. Your mother and sister are being arrested as accomplices. You will all have plenty of time to discuss your family budget in federal prison."
As the police cruisers drove away, their sirens wailing into the night, Mariana walked out onto the balcony of her godmother's home. The cool night air felt fresh, washing away the last lingering traces of the toxic family that had tried to destroy her.
Elena walked up beside her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "It is over, my dear. You are finally free."
Mariana looked up at the stars, a genuine, beautiful smile gracing her lips.
"No, Aunt Elena," Mariana said, her eyes shining with pure confidence. "I'm not just free."
