CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH
Ethan didn’t understand what was happening.
The old woman pulled him up and quickly moved him toward the other side of the train.
“Don’t look back,” Margaret whispered.
But Ethan couldn’t stop himself.
The man in the black coat was watching him.
Like a hunter watching his prey.
“Who is he?” Ethan asked.
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“His name is Victor Hayes.”
Ethan’s face changed.
That name was familiar.
Victor Hayes was the man who had taken control of his father’s company after Daniel Carter disappeared.
The same man who appeared on television pretending to be a hero.
The same man Ethan believed was responsible for destroying his family.
“But why does he want me?” Ethan asked.
Margaret looked at the envelope inside his backpack.
“Because your father left you something that can destroy him.”
Ethan slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed his father standing beside Victor Hayes.
But there was something shocking.
Behind them was a secret room filled with documents.
And on the back of the photo, his father had written:
“The truth is hidden where nobody dares to look.”
Margaret suddenly became emotional.
“Your father trusted me.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You knew my father?”
The old woman nodded.
“I wasn’t just his employee.”
She took a deep breath.
“I was the woman who helped him uncover Victor’s crimes.”
Ethan couldn’t believe it.
For years, he thought he was alone.
But the person sitting across from him on a random train was the only person who knew the truth.
Then Margaret revealed something even more shocking.
“Ethan… your father didn’t die in an accident.”
The boy froze.
“What?”
“He was trying to protect you.”
The train suddenly stopped.
The lights went out.
Everyone screamed.
And when the lights came back on…
The envelope was gone.
Ethan looked around in panic.
Victor was standing at the end of the train holding the evidence.
But he wasn’t smiling anymore.
Because he had opened the envelope.
And inside, he found something that made his entire face turn pale.
A letter.
A letter written by Daniel Carter.
The first line said:
“Victor, if you are reading this, it means my son has found the woman who knows the truth.”
Victor looked at Ethan.
Then at Margaret.
And for the first time in twenty years…
Victor looked afraid.
Because the letter revealed a secret nobody knew.
Daniel Carter wasn’t trying to expose Victor.
He was protecting Victor’s biggest victim.
Margaret.
The old woman everyone thought was just a poor stranger on a train…
Was actually the original owner of the empire Victor stole.
And Ethan wasn’t a homeless boy.
He was the only person who could take everything back.
The train doors opened.
Police officers entered.
But they didn’t come for Ethan.
They came for Victor.
Margaret looked at Ethan and smiled.
“Your father knew this day would come.”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“But why did he leave me alone?”
Margaret held his hand.
“Because sometimes… the only way to survive a war is to make your enemies believe you have already lost.”
Years later, Ethan would become one of the youngest CEOs in America.
But he never forgot the day an old woman on a train changed his life.
