Ethan couldn’t breathe.
He stared at the birth certificate sitting on the table.

“What is this?”

“But you were never ordinary.”
Margaret stepped between them.
“Don’t listen to her, Ethan.”
Sophia looked at the old woman and laughed.
“You still protect him after all these years?”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“Because someone has to tell him the truth.”
Sophia turned back to Ethan.
“The truth is that your father stole you away.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Sophia pulled out another document.
“Your real parents weren’t Daniel and his wife.”
She placed the paper on the table.
“Your mother was Amelia Blackwood, the last heir of the Blackwood family.”
Ethan’s hands started shaking.
“No…”
“Yes,” Sophia whispered.
“And when your mother discovered that someone inside the family was planning to murder her and take control of the empire, she trusted Daniel to protect you.”
Ethan looked at Margaret.
“Is this true?”
The old woman remained silent.
And that silence hurt more than any answer.
“Margaret…”
The old woman finally nodded.
“I’m sorry, Ethan.”
She looked down.
“Your father wanted to tell you everything. But every time he tried, someone got closer to finding you.”
Ethan stepped back.
“So my whole life was a lie?”
Sophia walked closer.
“Not a lie.”
She smiled.
“A disguise.”
Then she revealed the shocking part.
“Daniel Carter wasn’t your real father…”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
“He was your guardian.”
The room became silent.
Everything Ethan believed about his childhood began falling apart.
The man he called Dad.
The memories he treasured.
The sacrifices Daniel made.

Then Sophia opened one final file.
Inside was a photograph.
A young woman holding a baby.
Ethan immediately recognized the baby.

“My mother…”
Sophia nodded.
“She survived.”
Margaret looked shocked.
“No… that can’t be.”

“That’s why Daniel hid Ethan.”
She leaned closer.
“Because if the world knew Amelia Blackwood was alive, the people who wanted the empire would destroy everything to find her.”
Ethan stared at the photo.
“Where is she now?”
Sophia didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked toward the security camera in the corner.
“Because she’s been watching you.”
Ethan turned around.
The camera light was blinking.
Someone was on the other side.
Someone had been listening.
Suddenly, the door behind them opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Tired.
With tears in her eyes.
Ethan couldn’t move.
Because he knew that face.
Even though he had never met her.
The woman whispered:
“Ethan…”
His heart stopped.
“How do you know my name?”
The woman took a step forward.
“Because I gave it to you.”
The entire room went silent.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Sophia looked shocked.
And Ethan heard the words he had spent his entire life waiting for.
“I’m your mother.”
For seventeen years, Ethan believed he was an orphan.
For seventeen years, he thought everyone he loved was gone.
