CHAPTER 3: THE SECRET ROOM UNDER THE CITY

Three days after Victor Hayes was arrested, the world believed the nightmare was finally over.
News channels across America called it the biggest corporate scandal in decades.
The man who had stolen billions.
The man who destroyed a family.
The man who fooled everyone for twenty years.
Was finally behind bars.
But Ethan knew something was wrong.
Because before Victor was taken away, he whispered one sentence that kept haunting him:
“Your father never told you what was under the city.”
At first, Ethan thought it was just another threat.
Until Margaret received a package.
No sender.
No address.
Only one sentence written on the front:
“Daniel’s son is ready. Open this when he learns the truth.”
Margaret’s hands started shaking.
She knew that handwriting.
It belonged to Daniel Carter.
Ethan watched as the old woman slowly opened the package.
Inside was a small metal key.
And a map.
A map of the city’s underground tunnels.
“What is this?” Ethan asked.
Margaret looked terrified.
“Something your father spent years hiding.”
That night, Ethan and Margaret followed the map beneath an abandoned subway station.
The deeper they walked, the colder it became.
Finally, they reached a massive steel door.
There was no lock.
Only a fingerprint scanner.
Ethan stepped forward.
The moment his finger touched the scanner…
The door opened.
Inside was a room filled with thousands of files.
Photos.
Documents.
Recordings.
Everything Daniel Carter had collected before he disappeared.
But then Ethan noticed something strange.
There were hundreds of pictures of him.
Since he was a child.
Watching him grow up.
Protecting him from a distance.
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“My father was watching me this whole time…”
Margaret nodded.
“He never abandoned you.”
She picked up one file.
“This is the truth he wanted you to discover when you were old enough.”
Inside was a recording.
Daniel Carter appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Ethan froze.
“Dad…”
The recording began.
“Ethan, if you are watching this, it means I failed to protect you.”
Ethan covered his mouth.
“No…”
Daniel continued:
“But I need you to know something. Victor Hayes was never the biggest enemy.”
Margaret looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
The video continued.
“Victor was only a puppet.”
A silence filled the room.
“Someone much more powerful controlled everything.”
Ethan stepped closer to the screen.
“Who?”
Then Daniel revealed a name.
A name that shocked Margaret.
A name nobody expected.
“The person who destroyed our family… is your own blood.”
Ethan froze.
The screen showed a photograph.
A woman standing beside Daniel.
A woman Ethan had seen his entire childhood.
A woman everyone believed was his protector.
His aunt.
Sophia Carter.
Margaret dropped the file from her hand.
“That’s impossible…”
But Daniel’s voice continued:
“Sophia knew everything. She knew about the company. She knew about the money. She knew about my investigation.”
The video suddenly glitched.
Before ending, Daniel said one final thing:
“Ethan… trust no one.”
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan heard footsteps behind them.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone was inside the secret room.
Margaret turned around.
Her face became pale.
Because standing in the doorway…
Was Sophia Carter.
The woman Ethan thought was his last remaining family.
She smiled softly.
“Congratulations, Ethan.”
He stepped back.
“What are you doing here?”
Sophia looked around the room.
“Finding what your father hid from me.”
Ethan’s voice shook.
“You killed my father.”
Sophia smiled.
“No.”
She walked closer.
“I saved you from him.”
Ethan looked confused.
“What?”
Sophia whispered:
“Your father wasn’t protecting you from Victor…”
She pointed at the files.
“He was protecting you from the truth about yourself.”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“What truth?”
Sophia reached into her bag and pulled out an old birth certificate.
Then she placed it on the table.
Ethan looked down.
And his entire world collapsed.
Because the name written on the document wasn’t Ethan Carter.
It was another name.
A name connected to the most powerful family in America.
A family that disappeared twenty years ago.
A family everyone thought was dead.
Sophia smiled.
“Now you finally understand why they were afraid of you.”

Ethan wasn’t the last survivor of a destroyed family.
He was the heir to an empire that was never supposed to return.
