CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET HIDDEN FOR EIGHT YEARS

Introduction

The rooftop remained frozen in silence.

Nobody reached for another glass.

Nobody spoke.

Hundreds of eyes stared at the homeless boy while Ethan Ashford gripped the faded photograph so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

The sentence echoed through his mind.

"Your father stole my eyes to save yours."

It sounded impossible.

It sounded insane.

Yet...

for some reason...

it also sounded frighteningly familiar.

Body

Ethan slowly lifted his trembling head.

"My father is dead."

The boy quietly nodded.

"I know."

"He died believing the truth would be buried with him."

One of the bodyguards stepped forward angrily.

"That's enough! Arrest him!"

But Ethan raised one hand.

"No."

His voice had changed.

It no longer sounded like the cold billionaire everyone feared.

It sounded like a frightened seventeen-year-old boy searching for answers.

"Let him talk."

The rooftop became silent once again.

The homeless boy carefully reached into his backpack.

Instead of money...

instead of weapons...

he pulled out a thick brown envelope.

Inside were dozens of old medical documents.

Yellowed hospital records.

Blood-test results.

Signed legal forms.

Photographs.

Every page carried the same hospital logo.

St. Gabriel Medical Center.

Closed seven years earlier after a mysterious corruption scandal.

The boy handed the documents to Ethan's attorney.

"Read page fourteen."

The attorney opened it.

His confident expression disappeared.

His hands started shaking.

"...This..."

He flipped another page.

Then another.

"No..."

The lawyer looked directly at Ethan.

"Sir..."

"I think..."

"...you need to hear this."

He began reading aloud.

"Patient A suffered severe retinal nerve damage after a laboratory accident."

"Experimental neural transplant approved under confidential emergency authorization."

"Compatible donor located."

The attorney stopped reading.

His lips refused to continue.

Ethan whispered,

"Who's the donor?"

The lawyer slowly turned the next page.

A childhood photograph was attached.

Two boys.

One smiling.

One unconscious.

The smiling child was Ethan.

The unconscious child...

was the homeless boy.

The rooftop gasped.

The lawyer's voice barely escaped.

"The donor's name..."

"...was Noah Carter."

Everyone turned toward the homeless boy.

"You?"

Noah nodded.

"I was nine."

"I survived."

"But I lost something far more valuable than my eyesight."

Confused whispers spread through the crowd.

Ethan frowned.

"You said my father stole your eyes."

Noah shook his head.

"No."

"He stole my future."

Tears slowly filled his eyes.

"My mother signed permission for experimental treatment after doctors promised they could save both of us."

"They lied."

"They secretly abandoned my surgery."

"They used the money meant for my rehabilitation to protect your family's reputation."

"My mother spent every dollar fighting them."

"She died before anyone believed her."

Silence crushed the rooftop.

Then Ethan quietly asked,

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Noah looked at him with heartbreaking calm.

"Because someone kept changing every hospital record."

"And that someone..."

"...is standing behind you."

Ethan slowly turned his wheelchair.

Standing near the terrace doors...

was Richard Hale.

His father's closest friend.

His legal guardian.

The man who had controlled Ethan's fortune since his father's death.

Richard smiled politely.

Then...

he slowly clapped.

"Very impressive."

"You found the file."

His smile disappeared.

"But unfortunately..."

"...truth doesn't matter if nobody survives long enough to tell it."

At that exact moment—

three armed men stepped out from the shadows.

Guests screamed.

Bodyguards reached for their weapons.

The rooftop exploded into chaos.

Ending

Gunfire echoed across the rooftop.

People ran in every direction.

Ethan couldn't see the danger.

But suddenly...

someone shoved his wheelchair backward just before a bullet shattered the marble beside him.

It wasn't a bodyguard.

It was Noah.

The homeless boy threw himself in front of the billionaire.

A sharp crack echoed through the night.

Then Noah collapsed.

Blood slowly spread across his torn hoodie.

Ethan reached forward blindly.

"Noah!"

The rooftop erupted into screams.

And for the first time in eight years...

Ethan saw something.

Not clearly.

Not perfectly.

Just...

May you like

a tiny flash of light.

To be continued in Chapter 3...
