Chapter 20 - The Final Cookie

Ten years later, the whitewashed cottage in San Lucas looked older, its paint weathered by the relentless sea salt, but the porch was filled with potted ferns and the sound of laughter.

A tall, broad-shouldered young man of nineteen stood in the kitchen, wearing a faded college hoodie and whistling softly while he pulled a fresh tray of chocolate chip cookies out of the oven. The sweet, rich scent of vanilla and melted butter filled the room, warm and golden and completely devoid of fear.

He used a thick mitt to set the hot baking sheet onto the wooden counter, then picked up a spatula and slid a single, perfect cookie onto a small white plate.

He carried it across the room and set it down on the table right in front of his mother, who was sitting by the window grading college admission essays with her reading glasses slid down the bridge of her nose.

Sarah looked up, her graying hair framing a face that had finally found total peace. She stared at the cookie, then looked up at her son, a knowing, affectionate smile touching her lips.

"What's this for?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

The young man leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest, his hands entirely steady, the faint white scars on his right fingers barely visible in the afternoon light.

"Just leaving a clue," he smiled, his eyes bright with a future that belonged entirely to him. "So you'd always know where we landed."
