Chapter 5 - The Escape to Nowhere

Realizing the room had slipped entirely out of his control, Arthur executed a tactical retreat with terrifying smoothness. He didn't scream or throw punches; men like him never made that mistake in public. Instead, he flashed a martyr’s smile, shook his head in bitter disappointment, and looked at Dr. Vance.
"You're making a terrible mistake, and my wife will pay for this delusion by morning," Arthur said clearly, ensuring every nurse and staff member in the corridor heard him. He turned on his heel and walked out, his stride even and measured, leaving a trail of poison in his wake.
By 3:00 AM, the police had taken formal statements. The boy’s hand was wrapped in a rigid fiberglass splint, stark white against his bruised skin. They were told they couldn't return to the house on Maple Street because an emergency protective order was being filed immediately.
"Where do we sleep?" the boy asked quietly as they sat in the empty waiting room, waiting for a transport car to a local family shelter.
His mother looked down at her hands—hands that were no longer shaking. "We go to my sister’s place in upstate New York," she said softly. "The house he doesn't know about. The one I swore I’d never crawl back to."

They piled into a taxi rented with the last of her secret cash stash. As the hospital faded into the rearview mirror, the boy pressed his injured hand against his chest and watched the dark highway stretch out endlessly before them. He thought they were safe. He thought the monster had been left behind in the emergency room.
He was dangerously wrong. Arthur wasn't just a suburban abuser; he was a man with deep, dangerous connections, and he had already made a phone call to someone far more terrifying than the police.
