Chapter 4 - The Weaponized Key

Instead of shrinking back, the mother slowly reached into the pocket of her coat. She didn't look at Arthur. She didn't look at the social worker. She pulled out the heavy brass house key she had taken from his palm twenty minutes ago, set it squarely on the stainless-steel tray next to the surgical scissors, and let out a dry, chilling laugh.

"History of behavioral incidents?" she repeated, her voice cutting through the sterile room like broken glass. "Yes, Arthur. There is. Five years of it."

Arthur’s polished facade flickered for a microsecond. "Honey, you're not thinking clearly. Let's go home and talk about this privately."

"No," she said, finally turning her head to lock eyes with her husband. "You spent five years convincing me that every bruise was clumsy, every broken plate was an accident, and every tear was just my son being 'difficult.' You built an entire fortress out of your lies, Arthur. But tonight, you left a cookie on the floor."

Dr. Vance stepped closer to the medical tray, picking up the boy’s medical chart and glaring at Arthur. "Mr. Miller, pediatric fractures of this specific pattern—crush injuries consistent with a heavy wooden drawer dropped or slammed from above with linear pressure—do not happen from a child 'yanking' something shut. Furthermore, hospital security is already reviewing the lobby cameras where you just claimed you drove here 'normally,' despite our front desk logging your license plate pulling in at 11:42 PM doing eighty miles per hour."

Arthur’s jaw tightened. The mask was slipping, revealing the cold, calculating predator underneath. He took one step toward the bed, his hand reaching out as if to grab the boy’s shoulder. "You little bastard," he muttered under his breath.

Instantly, the security guard stepped directly into his path, his hand resting heavily on his belt. "Step back, sir. You're interfering with a medical investigation and a mandatory child abuse report."
