CHAPTER 1 — The Attack That Made No Sense
Every sunrise on Thomas Carter's ranch followed the same peaceful routine.
Before the dew had disappeared from the grass, Thomas would fill a metal bucket with fresh grain and walk toward the old wooden barn where Thunder was already waiting.
Thunder wasn't just another horse.
He was family.
Thomas had delivered Thunder into the world after a difficult birth. When the foal nearly died from pneumonia, Thomas spent weeks sleeping on straw beside him, bottle-feeding him through the night. When Thunder broke a leg as a young colt, Thomas refused to sell him or give up hope.
For fifteen years, they had been inseparable.
The ranch workers often joked that Thunder trusted Thomas more than he trusted any horse.
Whenever Thomas approached, Thunder would whinny softly, lower his head, and gently nudge his shoulder like an oversized puppy.
Not once—not a single time—had Thunder ever shown aggression.
Until that morning.
Thomas slid open the barn door.
"Morning, old boy."
Instead of greeting him, Thunder exploded into a deafening scream.
The stallion's ears flattened.
His muscles trembled violently.
His nostrils flared as if he smelled danger.
Thomas froze.
Something wasn't right.
"Easy... easy, Thunder..."
He took one cautious step forward.
Without warning...
The massive horse launched himself into the air.
His front hooves smashed against the wooden wall only inches from Thomas's face.
CRACK!
The entire barn shook.
Before Thomas could react, Thunder slammed his enormous chest into him with unbelievable force.
Thomas crashed backward into the timber wall.
The air burst from his lungs.
Pain shot through his ribs.
Thunder kept pushing.
Harder.
Harder.
The horse's powerful body pinned him so tightly he couldn't even raise his arms.
Huge iron hooves pounded the dirt inches from his legs.
One misplaced kick...
One frightened movement...
Thomas knew it would be over.
"THUNDER!"
His desperate scream echoed through the barn.
But Thunder ignored him completely.
The horse wasn't acting angry.
He looked...
Terrified.
His eyes darted wildly toward the far corner of the barn.
He kept snorting, stomping, and shoving Thomas away from something hidden behind him.
Thomas struggled desperately.
Every time he tried to move around Thunder, the stallion blocked him again.
It was as if the horse refused to let him cross an invisible line.
Wood splintered.
Dust filled the air.
Thomas finally squeezed through a narrow gap beside an old stall gate and threw himself outside before slamming the heavy barn doors shut.
His entire body shook uncontrollably.
Within seconds, workers rushed across the ranch.
"What happened?"
"Thunder attacked me..."
Nobody believed what they were hearing.
Thunder?
The gentlest horse on the ranch?
The veterinarian arrived that afternoon.
Temperature normal.
Heart normal.
Eyes normal.
No injuries.
No infection.
No signs of rabies.
Yet Thunder refused to calm down.
Every person who approached the barn was met with violent kicking and terrifying screams.
By sunset, rumors spread across the county.
"The horse has gone crazy."
"It's rabies."
"It's dangerous."
"It needs to be put down."
Thomas refused to believe it.
But over the next forty-eight hours...
Thunder became even more violent.
He barely touched his food.
He slept standing near the same dark corner of the barn.
And every single time someone reached for the barn door...
He threw himself in front of it.
Like he was guarding something.
Or...
Someone.
Finally, with tears in his eyes, Thomas signed the papers.
The veterinarian would return the following morning.
Thunder would be euthanized.
That night, unable to sleep, Thomas walked one last time toward the silent barn.
He wanted to say goodbye to the friend who had shared half his life.
