😱 CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Hidden Beneath the Barn

The ranch was silent.

Only the wind whispered through the old wooden fences as Thomas slowly approached the barn with a flashlight in one trembling hand.

He wasn't there to feed Thunder.

He wasn't there to argue with the veterinarian's decision.

He simply wanted to say goodbye.

As he unlocked the heavy door, Thunder didn't charge.

He didn't rear up.

Instead, the powerful stallion stood perfectly still, staring directly at Thomas.

For several long seconds, neither of them moved.

Then Thunder gave a soft, anxious whinny and slowly turned his head toward the darkest corner of the barn.

The same corner he had been guarding for two days.

Thomas frowned.

"What are you trying to show me, old friend?"

Thunder pawed the ground once.

Then again.

Not aggressively.

Almost... desperately.

Thomas carefully stepped closer.

The horse didn't block him this time.

Instead, Thunder followed only a few feet behind, snorting nervously.

The smell hit Thomas before he reached the corner.

It wasn't hay.

It wasn't damp wood.

It was something rotten.

He lifted his flashlight.

Behind several stacked bales of hay, the wooden floor had partially collapsed.

Fresh claw marks covered the boards.

Something had been digging from underneath.

Thomas grabbed a shovel leaning against the wall and pulled away the loose planks.

Suddenly...

A deep growl echoed from below.

His blood froze.

Two glowing yellow eyes stared back at him from the darkness.

A large wild mountain lion exploded from the hole.

The predator had apparently crawled beneath the barn after being injured, becoming trapped in the narrow crawl space.

Startled by the flashlight, it lunged upward.

Thomas stumbled backward.

Before the cougar could reach him—

Thunder struck.

The stallion slammed both front hooves into the predator with terrifying force.

The cougar crashed into the wall but sprang up again, hissing violently.

Thunder placed himself directly between Thomas and the wild animal.

Only then did Thomas understand.

Thunder had never been attacking him.

He had been preventing him from walking straight toward the hidden predator.

Every shove...

Every kick against the wall...

Every desperate attempt to pin Thomas away from that corner...

Had been an effort to save his life.

The mountain lion leaped again.

Thunder charged without hesitation.

The barn erupted into chaos.

Wood shattered.

May you like

Hay exploded into the air.

Thomas grabbed a long ranch pole and shouted for help as the terrifying battle unfolded only a few feet away.
