The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a quiet affair. No press releases, no politicians, no flashing camera bulbs from the Chicago Tribune.
Just a handful of people standing in the fourth-floor hallway outside Room 412.
Dr. Rebecca Sloan stood beside the doorway, holding a fresh chart, smiling as she watched nine-year-old Evan—now running, laughing, and showing off his soccer trophies—chase a rubber ball down the corridor.
A few feet away, Nneka Okafor stood wearing a vibrant blue headscarf, holding a small basket of fresh ginger biscuits she had baked that morning.
Beside her, seven-year-old Amara wore her yellow raincoat—even though the sun was shining brightly through the hospital windows—and carried a brand-new, beautifully sewn rag doll with green thread and a tiny denim pocket.
Daniel Kwon stood by the window, his hands in his pockets, looking out over the glittering blue expanse of Lake Michigan.
The dark dragon tattoo on his left arm was hidden beneath the sleeve of his tailored suit. Across his knuckles, the bold black ink still spelled out his creed:
LOYAL
HONOR
He didn't need to read the words anymore. He didn't need to collect debts or threaten enemies or build walls of fear to keep his world safe.
Amara walked over, tugging gently on the hem of his jacket.
"Mr. Daniel?" she asked, looking up with her big, bright eyes.
Daniel knelt down to her eye level, his scarred face softening into a warm, gentle smile. "Yes, Amara?"
"Are you still lost?" she asked innocently.

"No, sweetheart," Daniel said, looking past her toward his son, who was laughing down the hall, and toward the open door of Room 412 where the sunlight poured across the clean white sheets. "For the first time in my life... I finally walked into the right room."
