Chapter 9 - THE LEDGER IS BURNEDThree days later, deep in the subterranean vaults beneath the financial district of Seoul, South Korea, five elderly men sat around a polished black granite table.

They were the remaining elders of the Kowloon Syndicate—men who had ruled Asian shipping lanes, drug distribution networks, and underground banking cartels for half a century. They operated in the shadows, untouchable by Interpol, unbothered by governments.

The heavy steel doors of the vault swung open.

A single man walked in.

He wore a pristine black trench coat over a charcoal suit. His shoes clicked against the marble floor with a rhythmic, measured cadence that sounded like the ticking of a doomsday clock.

He didn't bring an army. He walked in alone.

The chief elder, a man with white hair combed straight back and eyes like chipped obsidian, leaned forward, resting his liver-spotted hands on the table.

"Kwon," the elder rasped. "You have a lot of nerve walking into the inner council chamber without an invitation after your men executed three of our regional directors in Chicago."

Daniel stopped ten feet from the table. He didn't bow. He didn't show deference. He simply reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick, heavy stack of encrypted flash drives, and tossed them onto the center of the granite table.

The flash drives skidded across the smooth stone and stopped right in front of the chief elder’s hands.

"What is this?" the elder demanded, his voice tightening with suspicion.

"Every bank account number, offshore shell company, encrypted communication server, and political bribe ledger belonging to the Kowloon Syndicate across North America, Europe, and East Asia," Daniel said calmly.

The room went dead silent. The other four elders sat frozen, their breathing suddenly audible in the heavy vault air.

"You... you betrayed us?" the chief elder hissed, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the marble. "If you release those keys to federal intelligence, our entire empire will collapse within forty-eight hours! You'll be ruined too—your shipping lines, your clubs, your assets—everything will be seized!"

Daniel smiled. It was a cold, beautiful, terrifying smile.

"I already burned the ledgers," Daniel said quietly. "Copies of those drives are currently sitting on the desks of the Attorney General in Washington, the Director of Interpol in Lyon, and every major financial regulatory board from Zurich to Tokyo. They have a time-delay trigger set for exactly twelve minutes from now."

The chief elder’s face turned the color of ash. He lunged across the table, his hands shaking as he grabbed for the flash drives. "You insane bastard! You destroyed everything we spent fifty years building!"

"No," Daniel said, turning his back on them and walking toward the heavy steel vault doors. "I destroyed everything you spent fifty years building. My empire was never yours to begin with."

"Kwon!" the elder screamed as secret service alarms began to wail through the subterranean corridors behind him. "You can't walk away from this! We will hunt you to the ends of the earth! You have no family left that we can't—"

Daniel stopped at the threshold. He didn't turn around.

"My son is playing soccer in Chicago," Daniel said over his shoulder, his voice as calm as a summer lake. "And across town, a little girl is drawing pictures with pencils I bought her."

He raised his hand, waving a casual two-finger farewell over his shoulder.

"Try to find them," Daniel whispered into the rising wail of the alarms. "And see what happens when you step into the wrong room."

He walked out of the vault, the heavy steel doors slamming shut behind him with the final, echoing crash of a tomb sealing its dead.
