Chapter 3 - THE ARCHITECT OF DECEPTION"You're insane," I breathed, backing away until the edge of the mattress pressed against the back of my legs.

"Insane?" Nolan chuckled, a low, dismissive sound that made my skin crawl. He walked further into the room, looking around as if he were inspecting a hotel he was considering purchasing. "Sarah, let's be real. You've always been dramatic. But this? This is business. Victoria Vance and I realized months ago that fighting a bitter divorce in court would take years and cost a fortune in legal fees. Victoria has high standards for her executive team—she couldn't have her senior vice president bogged down by a messy, public scandal or an expensive settlement."

"Victoria Vance?" I stared at him, the name clicking into place. Victoria was Nolan's direct boss at Apex Logistics. Rumors had swirled for years about their overly close professional relationship, but Nolan had always laughed them off as corporate jealousy. "She helped you orchestrate this? She's helping you steal my child and my home?"

"She's helping me secure my future," Nolan corrected sharply, his casual demeanor hardening into something sharp and corporate. "Victoria wants clean lines. She wanted the Naperville property cleared out, the assets consolidated, and custody settled quietly before we announce our merger next month. And frankly, Sarah, you made it too easy. You trusted me. You believed every lie I told about Seattle. You were so busy playing the good housewife that you didn't notice I never actually left the zip code."

"Lacey saw you," I spat, my voice shaking with rage. "You used our eight-year-old daughter in your sick little game. You made her an accomplice to your surveillance."

"Lacey is a child; she sees what she's told to see," Nolan said dismissively, waving a hand in the air. "She thought it was a game. Kids love games. And now that you know, well... it just accelerates the timeline."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, tapping the screen with an air of absolute authority.

"What are you doing?" I demanded.

"Calling Victoria," Nolan replied smoothly, holding the phone up to his ear. "And calling our security team. You see, Sarah, the draft papers in my bag state that you had a severe psychological episode tonight—threatening me with violence in our own home. I have audio recorders hidden in the baseboards of this entire room. Every angry word you've spoken, every tremor in your voice, is being streamed directly to Victoria’s legal server."

My breath hitched. The baseboards. The small decorative holes I had noticed in the corners of the room last month—he had told me they were for ventilation repairs.

"You planned every single second of this," I whispered.

"Of course we did," Nolan smiled coldly as the phone connected on the other end. "Welcome to the real world, Sarah. Some people build empires. Others get buried beneath them. And right now... you're standing in the dirt."
