Chapter 4 - THE COUNTER-STRIKEBefore Nolan could speak another word into his phone, I lunged forward with a speed that caught him completely off guard.

I didn't try to grab the phone. Instead, I drove my shoulder directly into his chest, slamming him backward against the bedroom door. The phone flew out of his hand, clattering across the hardwood floor and sliding underneath the dresser.
"What the hell—!" Nolan gasped, stumbling as the wind was knocked out of him.
"You think you're the only one who knows how to record a conversation, Nolan?" I snarled, pulling my own phone out of my back pocket. The screen was lit up, displaying a live recording app running at maximum gain.
Every single word he had just said—his confession about Victoria Vance, the staged divorce papers, the use of our daughter, and the premeditated framing—was captured in crystal-clear digital audio.
Nolan’s face drained of color. The arrogant corporate predator vanished in an instant, replaced by a desperate man realizing his house of cards was collapsing.
"Give me that phone!" he roared, lunging toward me.
I ducked to the side, spinning past him and bolting out of the bedroom. I didn't run down the stairs; I sprinted straight down the hall to Lacey’s room. I threw the door open, scooped her up into my arms before she could even ask questions, and slammed her door shut, throwing the heavy brass deadbolt that I had installed last year for extra safety.
"Mom? What's happening?" Lacey cried, burying her face in my shoulder.
"We're going for a sleepover, sweetie," I panted, my fingers flying across my screen.
Behind us, I heard Nolan slamming his fists against the drywall in the hallway, his voice muffled and enraged.
"Sarah! Open this door right now! You can't leave! You think you've won, but Victoria will destroy you before sunrise!"
I ignored him. I didn't call the police. I didn't call a local precinct that might be susceptible to corporate bribes or political influence from Apex Logistics.
Instead, I dialed a private, unlisted number—a contact I had saved two years ago when I helped my brother, a federal investigative journalist specializing in corporate corruption, vet a major shipping fraud case involving Apex Logistics.
The phone rang twice before a deep, gruff voice answered.
"Marcus here."
"Marcus," I said, my voice shaking but fiercely resolute. "It's Sarah. I found Nolan. He's been living in my walls for fifty-eight days with Victoria Vance's backing, setting me up for a fraudulent asset seizure and child abduction."
There was a brief, stunned silence on the other end of the line. Then, Marcus’s tone shifted into pure, tactical focus.

"Do you have the audio?"
"I have his full confession," I replied, pressing Lacey tighter against my chest as Nolan began kicking the door of the bedroom. "And Marcus? Bring your camera crew and the federal marshals. We're going to tear this entire house apart on live broadcast."
