Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Rearview MirrorThe hum of the Bentley's V8 engine was the only sound slicing through the suffocating silence of the night. Robert’s eyes flicked constantly to the rearview mirror, tracking the soft, rhythmic rise and fall of Emma’s chest as she drifted off to sleep against the plush leather headrest. Her blonde hair spilled over her shoulders, framing a face that was an uncanny, impossible mirror image of the woman he had buried five years ago.

Five years.
He had mourned Catherine with every fiber of his being. He had visited her empty casket every year on the anniversary of the crash, drowning his sorrows in work and whiskey. Yet, here was undeniable proof—or at least, a terrifyingly close facsimile of it—breathing softly in his back seat.
Robert's mind raced, replaying every moment of the investigation after the fiery crash on the rural highway. The state troopers had found the charred remains of their luxury sedan, completely burnt to the chassis. Dental records had confirmed a body inside, but the fire had been so intense that forensic experts had warned the identification was based on partial fragments and jewelry found in the wreckage.
Jewelry.
Robert’s hand instinctively went to the antique platinum ring on his left ring finger. The geometric pattern felt cold against his skin. If Catherine had survived, or if someone else had been driving her car that fateful night, it meant the entire foundation of his life was built on a lie. And the biggest question clawing at his chest: Why? Why would Catherine fake her own death, live in squalid hiding, and raise a child in the shadows of Milfield?
"Mr. Blackwood?"
Robert jumped slightly, gripping the steering wheel. Marcus, his fiercely loyal assistant, was on the Bluetooth speaker.
"I have the glass," Marcus said, his voice tense. "I personally delivered it to Dr. Jennings at Biogen Labs. He’s running a rush familial DNA extraction and comparison against your profile. We’ll have preliminary markers in two hours."
"Call me the second you have anything, Marcus. Don't spare any expense. I want a 99.9% certainty before we pull into Milfield."
"Understood, sir. But... Robert, are you sure about this? If she’s alive, and she went to such extreme lengths to disappear, walking into her life unannounced could trigger a dangerous response."
"She has my child, Marcus," Robert growled, his voice dropping an octave, laced with a mix of raw fury and desperate longing. "Nothing else matters."

He disconnected the call as the highway signs began to indicate their approach to Milfield. The asphalt gave way to cracked, unpaved roads lined with overgrown oak trees. The modern world peeled away, replaced by decaying industrial remnants and forgotten rural poverty.
They were entering a ghost town of closed mills and broken promises. And somewhere out there, hidden behind the abandoned Wheeler house, his wife and daughter were hiding from the world.
