Chapter 4 - The Vultures Circle"Who is here, Kate?!" Robert demanded, shaking her slightly, adrenaline surging through his system as the heavy wooden door of the shed was kicked open with a deafening crash.

Splintered wood flew across the room. Standing in the doorway, silhouetted by the harsh headlights of the SUVs, was a towering figure in a tailored charcoal suit. His silver hair was slicked back, and a cold, predatory smile played across his thin lips. Behind him stood four burly men in tactical jackets, their hands resting menacingly at their sides.
"Well, well, well," a smooth, cultured voice cut through the damp air. "Family reunions are always so touching. Aren't they, brother?"
Robert froze. The blood pounded in his ears like a war drum. He slowly turned his head toward the doorway.
Stepping out of the shadows was a face he hadn't seen in a quarter of a century. A face etched into family lore, rumored to have drowned in a yachting accident off the coast of Maine when they were twenty-one years old.
"James?" Robert whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "You're... you're dead. Your boat went down. There was an investigation—"
James Blackwood chuckled, a dark, chilling sound that echoed off the metal walls of the shed. "Dead? Oh, little brother, death is such a vulgar concept for people with our kind of money. It’s so much more convenient to stay dead when you’re orchestrating a corporate hostile takeover from the shadows."
Emma whimpered, burying her face deeply into Robert's leg. Robert instinctively placed a protective hand over the little girl's head, his eyes narrowing into slits as he glared at the brother he thought he'd lost.
"You," Robert snarled, taking a threatening step forward. "You staged your own death twenty-five years ago to loot the family trust, and now... what? This was all you? You forced Catherine into hiding?"
"Forced?" James raised an eyebrow, stepping further into the shed, his polished leather shoes crunching on the dirt floor. He looked at Catherine with a sickening display of faux-sympathy. "Now, that’s harsh, Robert. Kate made her choices. When I 'died,' I left behind a rather large vault of unallocated Blackwood assets. But a kingdom needs a king—and an heir."
James’s cold, calculating eyes shifted downward, locking onto little Emma.
Catherine shrieked, throwing herself between James and her daughter. "Stay away from her, James! You promised! You said if I stayed hidden, if I never contacted Robert, you'd leave her alone!"
"Promises are like corporate contracts, Kate—made to be broken when the terms no longer serve me," James smiled thinly. "Besides, my dear brother has built quite an empire over the last twenty-five years. Stellar Retreats. Thirty luxury hotels across the globe. Billions in valuation."

James walked closer, leaning in until his face was inches from Robert's.
"And since I'm legally dead, everything you built, Robert... legally belongs to my estate. Or, failing that, to my surviving bloodline." James's eyes gleamed with greed. "Starting with the cute little girl standing right behind you."
