Chapter 8 - Tears in the MoonlightRobert stopped just a foot away from them. The harsh red and blue lights flickered across Catherine's tear-stained, exhausted face. She looked older, thinner, marked by years of living in terror and shadows—but to Robert, she was more breathtaking than she had ever been on their wedding day.

"Kate," he whispered, his voice cracking with raw emotion.
Catherine looked up, her lower lip trembling violently. "I'm so sorry, Robert. I was so scared. When the crash happened... Arthur was there. He pulled me from the wreck, but then he showed me what he had done to the other car, the driver... and he told me if I ever came back to you, if I ever let you know I was alive, he would kill you and our unborn baby before we even reached the hospital."
She broke down completely, burying her face in her hands as deep, racking sobs tore through her chest. "I had to hide. I had to let you think I was dead so you would stay safe. Every single day for five years, I looked at this ring and died a thousand little deaths inside."
Robert didn't wait another second. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around both of them, pulling Catherine and little Emma into a desperate, unbreakable embrace.
Emma buried her small face into his chest, wrapping her tiny arms around his waist. "Are we going to a real house now, Daddy?" she whispered softly.
Robert pressed a kiss to the top of his daughter's blonde hair, a tear finally cutting a clean path through the dirt on his cheek.

"Yes, sweetie," Robert choked out, his voice thick with overwhelming joy and relief. "We're going home. All of us. And we're never, ever going to hide again."
Catherine looked up at him, a fragile, watery smile breaking through her tears. She reached out her trembling hand, sliding her own antique platinum ring out from the pocket of her flannel shirt, and pressed it against Robert's ring. The two rare blue diamonds caught the moonlight, shining side by side as if they had never been separated at all.
