Chapter 2 - The Ultrasound Room of DreamsAcross town, the air inside Dr. Harrison’s private examination room at the elite Boston Medical Pavilion smelled faintly of antiseptic, lavender candles, and extreme entitlement.

The room was far larger than a standard medical exam space, designed specifically for high-net-worth patients who paid five figures a year for VIP care. Right now, it looked more like a VIP lounge at a celebrity gala.
All seven members of the Hale family had packed themselves inside.
Arthur and Evelyn Hale, Preston’s wealthy, status-obsessed parents, sat side-by-side on the velvet consultation sofa, their faces beaming with undisguised triumph. Beside them stood Preston’s two sisters, corporate lawyers who looked at the exam table as if it were a boardroom altar. And right at the center, resting her hand protectively over her slightly rounded abdomen in a designer silk maternity dress, sat Brielle Foster.
Preston stood right beside the examination table, his hand resting proudly on Brielle’s shoulder, radiating the insufferable smugness of a man who believed he had successfully cheated the system and won first prize.
“Are you sure the equipment is calibrated for gender determination this early, Dr. Harrison?” Evelyn Hale asked, leaning forward, her diamond rings catching the bright clinical light. “Preston’s father and I need absolute certainty. The Hale family trust requires an undisputed male heir to secure the primary board allocations for the next generation.”
Dr. Melissa Harrison, a seasoned obstetrician with silver-streaked hair and an unreadable expression, glanced up from her multi-million-dollar ultrasound monitor. She offered a polite, professional smile, though her eyes remained sharp and analytical.
“Mrs. Hale, our imaging equipment is state-of-the-art,” Dr. Harrison replied calmly, adjusting her glasses. “At fourteen weeks, we can establish genetic markers with near-total accuracy. But let’s take a look together, shall we?”
“Oh, darling, look!” Brielle gasped dramatically, grabbing Preston’s arm as the doctor pressed the cold transducer gel against her lower abdomen.
The grayscale monitor flickered to life, projecting a grainy, pulsing image onto the massive wall-mounted screen. Gray shadows shifted and morphed into the unmistakable silhouette of a growing fetus—a tiny spine, a beating heart fluttering like a trapped butterfly, and small limbs curling inward.
The room erupted into a chorus of delighted gasps.
“There he is!” Preston announced loudly, puffing out his chest as if he had single-handedly sculpted the child himself. “Look at that profile. That’s a Hale chin if I’ve ever seen one. Future CEO material right there, mom.”
“Oh, my precious grandson,” Evelyn breathed, pressing a lace handkerchief to her eye as though overcome with aristocratic emotion.
Arthur Hale nodded heavily, crossing his arms with an expression of profound satisfaction. “Good riddance to that quiet, uninspired first marriage of yours, son. Lena never had the ambition, the social grace, or the bloodline strength to give us a proper heir. Brielle is bringing true prosperity back to this family.”
None of them noticed how Dr. Harrison’s hand suddenly froze on the ultrasound probe.
None of them saw the subtle, micro-expression of confusion that flashed across the doctor’s face as her eyes darted rapidly between the live monitor, the patient’s digital file on her tablet, and the genetic sequence data displayed in the corner of her screen.
Brielle giggled, leaning back against the pillows, basking in the adoration of her new high-society family. “I told you all from the very beginning. This baby was destined to elevate the Hales to a whole new level.”
Dr. Harrison cleared her throat. It wasn't a loud sound, but it carried an abrupt, chilling weight that instantly cut through the celebratory chatter.
The laughter died down in an instant. The room grew dead silent.
Preston frowned, his smug smile faltering just a fraction. “Is... is something wrong with the monitor, doctor? Is he moving too much?”
Dr. Harrison slowly lifted her hand from the transducer, turning her swivel chair away from the screen to face the entire family. Her expression was completely devoid of warmth. She tapped her stylus against the digital tablet twice, bringing up a secure, cross-referenced genetic identity panel.
Every single person in the room turned toward her at once.

“Mr. and Mrs. Hale,” Dr. Harrison said, her voice eerily calm and professional. “Before we proceed any further with this celebration... I need to ask Ms. Foster one very specific, non-negotiable medical question.”
Brielle’s face instantly lost its rosy color, her hands dropping from her stomach as a cold sweat broke out across her forehead.
