Chapter 3 - The Broken AltarTwo weeks before Beth’s dream wedding at the upscale Desert Mirage Resort in Scottsdale, the house of cards collapsed entirely.

Social media had been buzzing for months with Beth’s relentless countdown posts: #ThePerfectDay #SimpsonWedding #LivingMyBestLife. Hundreds of guests had received embossed gold-foil invitations. The catering was booked, the open bar secured, and the designer gown hanging in the bridal suite.

Then came Thursday morning.

I was sitting on my newly purchased secondhand sofa in Monterey, sipping coffee and watching the morning light hit my white walls, when my phone rang. It wasn't Jessica. It was an unknown Phoenix number.

“Joanna?” a breathless, frantic voice cried out. It was Beth.

The haughty confidence she’d worn in the kitchen weeks ago was entirely gone, replaced by raw, hysterical panic.

“What do you want, Beth?” I asked, keeping my voice level.

“You have to call your lawyer! You have to drop the charges right now!” Beth sobbed hysterically. “The venue just cancelled our contract! The caterers pulled out! Mom’s bank accounts have been frozen by a court order, and everyone in town is talking! My wedding is ruined! Ruined!”

I stood up, walking slowly to the window to look out at my front porch.

“Your wedding was funded by stolen money, Beth,” I said coldly. “Mom made her bed when she decided to light a fire under my life. Did you really think there wouldn't be ashes?”

“We’re your family!” Beth screamed through the phone, the mask dropping completely to reveal the spoiled entitlement underneath. “How could you do this to me over a stupid house?!”

“Because for ten years, you all treated me like a ghost funding your happiness,” I replied quietly. “Enjoy the silence, Beth. I finally have mine.”

I hung up the phone and blocked the number.

Little did I know, the fallout in Phoenix was only the opening act. My mother wasn't going down quietly—she was planning a desperate counter-strike that would bring the war straight to my doorstep in Monterey.
