Chapter 6 - The Family FractureBy Sunday morning, the news of Linda’s arrest had ripped through our extended family in Arizona like a wildfire.

My phone, which I had unblocked briefly to monitor legal updates, began vibrating incessantly. Group chats I hadn't looked at in years were exploding with frantic messages, accusations, and desperate pleas.
Uncle Mark: "Joanna, have you lost your mind? Your mother is sitting in a holding cell! Call the lawyers and fix this immediately!"
Aunt Susan: "How could you do this to Beth right before her wedding? Family is everything. You are breaking your mother's heart."
Not a single person asked if I was okay. Not a single person acknowledged the lighter, the stolen funds, or the police harassment. To them, my rebellion wasn't a defense of my rights—it was a betrayal of the family hierarchy.
Then came a private message from my father, Robert.
It wasn't sent in a group chat. It was a single, long email containing a scanned document and a brief note.
Joanna, Your mother is refusing bail unless I hand over the title to our house to pay her legal fees. I told her no. For thirty years, I watched her control every breath you and your sister took, and I was too cowardly to stop her. I’m sorry. Attached is a signed deposition detailing every single financial transfer she forced me to hide from you over the past decade. Use it however you need to. — Dad
I stared at the screen, my chest tightening. My father wasn't blameless—he had watched abuse happen from his armchair for a lifetime—but this confession was the final structural beam holding up my mother’s house of cards.
I forwarded the email straight to Jessica Webb.

“Well,” Jessica said when she called me ten minutes later, her voice crackling with excitement. “It looks like Linda’s empire of manipulation just lost its last defender. Are you ready for the grand finale in court, Joanna?”
“Let’s finish it,” I said.
