Chapter 5 - The Arrest WarrantLinda’s face turned the color of ash.

“A... a what?” she stammered, her voice cracking for the first time.

“A restraining order,” Officer Miller said, reading from the legal document. “Furthermore, the Maricopa County District Attorney in Arizona has officially upgraded your charges from grand theft to a Class 3 felony warrant with extradition requirements. Turn around and place your hands behind your back, please.”

“No! This is insane! Joanna, tell them!” Linda shrieked, lunging toward the door as the heavy metal chain slipped from the track because I hadn't latched it fully.

Her fingers clawed toward my face, missing my cheek by mere inches—the exact same hand that had held the lighter weeks ago.

Officer Miller moved instantly, grabbing her wrists with practiced efficiency and pinning her arms behind her. The sharp click of steel handcuffs echoed in the quiet Monterey night—a sound infinitely more satisfying than any victory I had ever imagined.

As they led her down the steps toward the cruiser, Linda twisted her neck, glaring back at me with eyes full of absolute venom.

“You’ll never work in this industry again! You’ll be ruined!” she screamed into the foggy night air.

I didn't flinch. I didn't cry.

I simply leaned against my doorframe, crossed my arms, and watched the red and blue lights paint her face as they pushed her into the back of the squad car.

When the cruiser finally backed out of my driveway and melted into the coastal mist, the silence returned. But this time, it wasn't an empty silence born of loneliness.

It was the profound, unshakable quiet of total freedom.
