Chapter 4 - Shadows in the GoldThe transformation was immediate and jarring.

By nightfall, the simple maid who used to scrub marble floors was draped in a dark velvet gown, her hair styled in intricate braids, wearing a diamond necklace that cost more than she would make in three lifetimes.

The wedding was held inside the private chapel on the Moretti estate. There were no flowers, no joyous songs, and no smiling guests. Only a solemn priest, two heavily armed guards acting as witnesses, and Vincent standing by the door with a grim expression.

Emma sat in the front pew, wearing a new white dress, holding her rabbit and looking up at the stained-glass windows in awe.

"By the power vested in me," the priest whispered, his hands trembling as he glanced at Alessandro, "I pronounce you husband and wife."

Alessandro did not kiss her. He simply took her hand, slid a heavy platinum ring embedded with a black diamond onto her finger, and leaned down to whisper in her ear.

"Welcome to hell, Mrs. Moretti."

That night, Sophia was moved from the tiny servant quarters in the basement to the grand master suite on the top floor. The room was immense, filled with antique furniture, heavy velvet drapes, and a balcony overlooking the glowing lights of New York City.

Emma was already fast asleep in the adjacent nursery, guarded by two loyal soldiers Alessandro personally selected.

Sophia stood near the balcony doors, her arms wrapped around herself, staring out at the rain slicking the courtyard below. She felt like a bird trapped in a gilded cage.

The door opened softly, and Alessandro stepped into the bedroom. He had stripped off his suit jacket and rolled up his white dress shirt sleeves, revealing intricate black tattoos crawling up his forearms—symbols of his family's dark bloodline.

"You should sleep," Alessandro said, walking toward the bar to pour himself a drink. "Tomorrow, the family council arrives. They will try to tear you apart with questions."

"I can handle them," Sophia said quietly, turning to face him. "I spent four years surviving an abusive man. A group of men in expensive suits doesn't frighten me."

Alessandro paused, his glass halfway to his lips. He looked at her, really looked at her, noting the quiet strength burning behind her tear-stained eyes.

"Marcus hurt you," Alessandro stated. It wasn't a question.

"Every day," Sophia confessed, her voice thick with old pain. "Until I took Emma and ran. I worked three jobs just to buy her milk. I took the cleaning job here because I thought the security would keep him away from us."

"He will never hurt you again," Alessandro said softly. "The man who killed him did you a favor, even if he tried to frame you for it."

"Do you know who killed him?" she asked, stepping closer to him.

Alessandro took a sip of his whiskey, his eyes darkening. "Julian’s men did it. But they didn't find the ledger on Marcus's body. That means..."

Alessandro stopped speaking as a sharp knocking echoed on the heavy bedroom door.

Vincent stepped inside, his face pale as paper.

"Don Alessandro," Vincent whispered, his voice trembling. "We have a massive problem. The police commissioner is at the gate with a federal warrant. They didn't just come for Sophia."

"What do they have?" Alessandro asked, his voice instantly turning to steel.

"They found the murder weapon," Vincent said, looking directly at Sophia with horror. "It was recovered from your daughter's bedroom closet inside this estate."
