Chapter 8 - The Queen’s CrownThe storm raged outside as midnight bled into the early hours of the morning.

Inside the master suite, Sophia sat on the edge of the large bed, holding a sleeping Emma close to her chest. Every thunderclap made her jump, every creak of the ancient house sending her heart into her throat. She had spent her entire life trying to escape violent men, yet tonight, she found herself praying for the safety of the most dangerous violent man of all.
At 3:00 AM, the heavy double doors of the master suite clicked open.
Sophia stood up immediately, her eyes searching the doorway.
Alessandro stepped inside. His coat was gone, his black shirt was rumpled, and his knuckles were bruised, but he was alive. Standing behind him was a trembling, tired six-year-old boy, wrapped in Alessandro’s heavy winter coat.
"Vincent!" Sophia cried quietly, tears of joy springing to her eyes.
"He's reunited with his grandfather downstairs," Alessandro said, his voice exhausted but filled with deep relief. "The warehouse is secure. Julian’s men are no longer a threat."
Sophia set Emma gently on the bed and walked over to Alessandro. Without thinking, driven by pure relief and emotion, she threw her arms around his neck and pulled him close.
Alessandro froze for a fraction of a second, unaccustomed to human warmth, before his long arms slowly wrapped around her waist, holding her tight against his broad chest.
"You came back," she whispered into his neck, catching the faint scent of rain and tobacco.
"I keep my promises, Mrs. Moretti," he murmured, his voice rumbling softly against her cheek.
When they pulled back, Sophia looked up into his eyes. "What happens now? Julian is in prison, Vincent's grandson is safe... but what about us? What about the ledger?"
Alessandro reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small, weathered leather notebook—the legendary ledger Marcus had stolen years ago.
"You found it?" Sophia asked in shock.
"It wasn't with Marcus, and it wasn't with Julian," Alessandro revealed, a gentle smirk gracing his lips. "It was tucked inside the lining of Emma’s stuffed rabbit."
Sophia’s jaw dropped. "What?!"
"Marcus must have hidden it inside the toy months ago when he visited your apartment," Alessandro explained. "He knew nobody would search a child’s rabbit. That's why he was hunting you down this morning."
"Are you going to use it to destroy the Council?" she asked nervously.
Alessandro looked down at the ledger, then at the sleeping child on the bed, and finally at the incredible woman standing before him.
Without a word, Alessandro walked over to the roaring fireplace in the corner of the suite. He threw the priceless, deadly ledger straight into the flames.
Sophia gasped as the dark leather curled and blackened, the secrets that had threatened to destroy so many lives turning to ash in seconds.
"Why did you burn it?" she asked softly, walking over to stand beside him at the hearth.
"Because I don't need fear or blackmail to rule my empire anymore," Alessandro said, turning to face her, his eyes shining with a burning, fierce passion. "And because I want a clean slate. For me, for this family... and for you."
He reached out, his large, rough hand gently cupping her jawline, his thumb softly tracing her lower lip.
"Our marriage started as a lie to save your life," Alessandro admitted, his voice low and intimate. "But I don't want it to be a lie anymore, Sophia. I want you to be my wife. For real."
Sophia felt a wave of warmth wash over her heart, melting away years of pain, fear, and loneliness. She looked at this ruthless Don who had stood as a shield for her daughter, who had fought through hell to protect a maid and her child.
"On one condition," Sophia whispered, a mischievous, tender smile breaking across her lips.
Alessandro raised an eyebrow, amused. "A maid giving terms to the Don?"
"You have to let Emma paint your face whenever she wants," Sophia said softly.
Alessandro let out a deep, genuine laugh—a sound the walls of the Moretti estate hadn't heard in decades. He pulled her closer, his lips hovering just inches from hers.
"Deal, Mrs. Moretti," he murmured, before pressing his lips to hers in a deep, fiery kiss that sealed their true destiny together.
The next morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden light across the master bedroom.
Alessandro sat at his massive mahogany desk in a crisp dark suit, reviewing high-level syndicate documents. But his grand, terrifying aura was somewhat undermined by the three-year-old girl sitting on his lap, humming a happy tune.
Emma held a brightly colored paintbrush, carefully putting the finishing touches on a brand-new masterpiece across the mafia Don’s face.
Sophia walked into the room carrying two cups of fresh coffee. She stopped at the doorway, leaning against the frame with a bright, radiant smile.
"What is it this time, Emma?" Sophia asked softly.
Emma proudly pointed her tiny brush at Alessandro’s cheek, where a bright gold crown now sat right above his jaw.
"He's not sad anymore, Mama," Emma announced with a giggly grin. "He's the King. And you're the Queen!"

Alessandro looked up from his papers, his eyes locking onto Sophia with pure, unyielding devotion. He reached out, took Sophia’s hand, and kissed her knuckles softly, completely unbothered by the gold paint drying on his cheek.
"She’s right, my love," Alessandro smiled, his voice full of warmth and absolute certainty. "And no one will ever break our kingdom again."
