The estate north of Chicago was quiet once more. The physical repairs to the west wing vault and the east wing residential corridor were finished, replaced by modern, reinforced steel and pristine, accessible architecture.

I stood on the balcony of my private study, watching the morning sun rise over the waterfront. The air was crisp, clean, and entirely free of ghosts.

Soft footsteps approached behind me. I turned to see Anna and Sarah standing in the doorway, sharing a quiet, understanding smile—two women who had survived the same monster and finally found peace.

“For your fortress,” she said seriously. “So you don’t lose any more money.”

I laughed, a deep, genuine sound that I hadn’t heard from myself in twenty years. I took the button, wrapped my arms around her small shoulders, and pulled both her and Anna close as the world outside our gates woke up safe, finally and forever.
