Chapter 5 - The Millionaire’s Gambit

Duncan Vale strode toward the disaster zone with the practiced confidence of a man who owned the ground he walked on.
Flanked by two private security guards and his lead attorney, he flashed a dazzling, charismatic smile for the lingering news cameras. He had just coordinated a "generous donation" of five million dollars to the emergency relief fund—a brilliant PR move designed to cement his status as Briarfield’s ultimate philanthropist before any uncomfortable questions could be asked.
"Captain," Duncan said, extending a manicured hand to the weary police commander managing the site. "I’m Duncan Vale. Vale Industries. We built this span's retrofit. My heart goes out to every family affected here today, and I want to personally ensure our engineering team takes full operational control of the site clearance to expedite public safety."
The police captain hesitated, looking down at the disaster zone. "Mr. Vale, municipal protocol dictates that the National Transportation Safety Board and independent forensic engineers secure the site for—"
"Protocol can wait, Captain," a sharp, clear voice interrupted from behind the police line. "Especially when the people who built the trap are trying to sweep the evidence under the rug."
Duncan froze. He turned his head slowly.
Walking toward him through the dust and debris was the nurse. Her scrubs were stained with dirt and blood, her hair escaping its makeshift knot, but her eyes were locked onto his with the terrifying intensity of an apex predator.
In her outstretched hand, she held the jagged piece of yellow industrial polymer.
Duncan’s smile didn't fade immediately—he was too good an actor for that—but his eyes betrayed a flicker of absolute panic. "Excuse me?" he said smoothly. "Madam, this is an active emergency zone. If you're a medical volunteer, your station is back on the lawn."
"My station is wherever people need protection from men like you," Nora said, stopping three feet away from him. She held up the polymer shard so the hovering news drones and cameras could catch every detail. "Do you know what this is, Mr. Vale? This is what's left of Pier 4. Your company certified forty tons of steel-reinforced concrete. Instead, you filled the core with cheap poly-resin to pocket the margin."
Whispers erupted instantly among the surrounding police officers, firefighters, and reporters.
Duncan let out a soft, condescending chuckle, shaking his head as if humoring an exhausted civilian. "My dear woman, you are a nurse. You deal with bandages and blood pressure. Structural engineering is a complex science far beyond your comprehension. Marcus, security—please escort this woman back to the medical tent before she hurts herself."
"Don't you dare touch me," Nora hissed, stepping forward with such fierce authority that the security guards actually stepped back.

She turned directly toward the live camera lens hovering overhead.
"My name is Nora Bellamy," she announced, her voice ringing clear across the entire bridge approach. "I spent seventeen years watching broken bodies come into my trauma bay. Today, I pulled three hundred and seventeen people out of a disaster that never should have happened. And I am telling every investigator in this state: look inside the piers before Vale's cleanup crew dynamites the evidence."
