Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A PREDATORThe black SUV idling outside was a custom-armored Mercedes G-Wagon with tinted glass that swallowed the streetlights.

Twenty minutes earlier, Adrian’s men had carried Ash down the three flights of stairs with a gentleness that defied their brutal appearance. One of them, a scarred giant named Vance, had looked at Mara with cautious respect, holding the door open as if she were royalty. Now, Mara sat in the leather-lined backseat of the vehicle, the giant mastiff resting his heavy, warm head across her lap, while Adrian sat opposite her, tapping rhythmically against his knee with a silver signet ring.
"Where are we going?" Mara asked, looking out the frost-streaked window as they crossed the Williamsburg Bridge. The Manhattan skyline loomed ahead like a jagged wall of teeth against the night sky.
"To a place where people don't ask questions unless they want to stop breathing," Adrian answered flatly. "Don't worry. Dr. Sterling is the best trauma surgeon money can buy. He patches up my men when the local hospitals ask too many questions. Ash will have the best care available."
"And me?" Mara asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. The adrenaline of the find was fading, replaced by the crushing exhaustion of a day that refused to end. "What happens to me after your dog is patched up? Do I go back to my empty apartment with a rent hike and a ruined career?"
Adrian leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. The dim dashboard light caught the hard planes of his face. "Nobody ruins anything belonging to someone who helped my dog. Dean Holloway made a mistake thinking he could play god in my borough. Red Hook isn't just shipping lanes, Miss Ellison. It's an ecosystem. And Dean just stepped on a very venomous tail."
"You don't have to fight my battles," Mara said, though her heart hammered a frantic, hopeful rhythm against her ribs. For months, she had fought alone. The idea of someone stepping in—someone with real, raw power—was intoxicating and terrifying in equal measure.
"I’m not fighting your battles," Adrian corrected softly. "I’m clearing my path. Anyone who hurts the people—or things—connected to me ceases to be a variable."
They pulled into a sprawling, nondescript industrial complex in Red Hook. High brick walls topped with razor wire, security cameras that tracked their approach with mechanical precision, and heavy iron gates that swung open automatically at the sight of the Mercedes.
Inside the primary warehouse, the atmosphere was a bizarre mix of high-stakes corporate enterprise and an underground trauma ward. Polished concrete floors reflected overhead industrial lights. Along one wall sat rows of classic cars; along the other, a fully equipped medical station staffed by a frantic-looking doctor in scrubs and two armed guards standing at attention.

As soon as the doors opened, Dr. Sterling rushed forward with a gurney. Ash was lifted gently, his tail giving one final, weak thump against the stretcher as he was wheeled toward the surgical suite.
Adrian stood beside Mara, watching them go. He turned to her, his gaze intense. "Come. Let's get you a cup of coffee that doesn't taste like tin, and we're going to make a phone call to Mr. Holloway."
