Chapter 4 - SCARS AND STITCHESThe digital clock on the warehouse wall glowed 3:14 AM.

Dr. Sterling walked into the office, wiping his hands with a sterile towel, looking exhausted but triumphant.
"The dog is going to make a full recovery, Mr. Voss," the doctor announced, tossing the towel into a disposal bin. "Cleaned out the remaining lead, closed the muscle tear with twenty-four dissolvable sutures, and started him on a heavy dose of cephalexin. He's sleeping off the anesthesia now. Give him forty-eight hours of strict rest, and he'll be back to terrorizing your security detail."
Adrian nodded curtly. "Good work, Sterling. Take the rest of the night off."
As the doctor left, Adrian stood up and walked over to Mara, who had been listening with bated breath. A visible wave of relief washed over her features, her shoulders dropping three inches as the tension finally bled out of her spine.
"He's going to be okay," Mara whispered, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through the exhaustion on her face.
"Because of you," Adrian replied. He reached down, offering her a large, warm hand. "Come. I want to show you something."
Mara hesitated for a second, then placed her hand in his. His grip was firm, calloused, and surprisingly gentle. He pulled her up effortlessly, guiding her down a wide, warmly lit corridor at the back of the office suite.
They stopped in front of a heavy oak door with a frosted glass window. Adrian pushed it open, revealing a spacious, warmly appointed recovery suite. In the center of the room sat a massive veterinary recovery bed covered in clean, thick fleece blankets. And sprawled across it, snoring softly with a shaved shoulder and a neat row of surgical stitches, was Ash.
As they stepped inside, the giant mastiff’s ears twitched. His heavy eyelids fluttered open, revealing those dark, intelligent eyes. He didn't try to stand, but his tail gave a weak, happy thump against the mattress.
Adrian walked over, sitting on the edge of the bed, burying his face in the soft fur behind Ash’s ears. "Hey, big guy," he murmured, a rare, unguarded tenderness softening his rugged features. "You gave me a scare."
Mara watched them from the doorway, a lump forming in her throat. For a man who controlled empires and struck terror into the hearts of corrupt investors, Adrian Voss possessed a depth of loyalty that she had never encountered in the sterile, superficial world she had left behind.
"Why did someone shoot him?" Mara asked quietly, walking closer to the bed.
Adrian looked up, his expression hardening back into the formidable boss of Red Hook. "A rival syndicate—the Moretti family out of Staten Island—trying to send a message about the upcoming dock expansion. They thought taking my dog would make me flinch."
"And did it?"
May you like
Adrian stood up slowly, stepping until he was standing just inches from Mara. The air between them suddenly felt charged, heavy with unspoken tension and the strange, magnetic pull of two completely different worlds colliding in the dark.
"No," Adrian said, his voice low and steady. "It just made me realize how vulnerable my life was... until tonight."
