Chapter 5 - DAWN OVER RED HOOKThe first streaks of pale gray light were beginning to bleed over the East River when the black Mercedes dropped Mara off in front of her apartment building on Kent and Ten Eyck.

The street was quiet, save for the distant rumble of a delivery truck and the biting morning wind. But something had changed. Parked directly in front of her building was a sleek, unmarked black sedan. Two men in dark suits stood near the entrance, and as Mara stepped out of Adrian’s car, one of them hurried forward to open the lobby door for her.

Adrian remained in the back seat of the Mercedes, rolling down the tinted window a few inches.

"You don't have to stay, you know," Mara said, leaning down slightly to look at him through the glass. "I can take it from here."

"I don't leave loose ends, Mara," Adrian replied, using her first name for the first time. It sounded natural on his lips, like something he had been practicing for months. "And you are definitely not a loose end."

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a thick manila envelope, handing it through the window.

Mara took it with trembling fingers. She pulled back the flap. Inside sat the original deed to her building—with her name printed in bold, embossed black ink at the top, free and clear of all encumbrances. Beneath it was a formal, stamped retraction letter from the Department of Consumer Affairs, completely clearing her name of any wrongdoing.

"How...?" Mara stared at the papers, her voice failing her.

"Dean Holloway realized the error of his ways around 4:30 AM," Adrian said smoothly, a faint, dangerous smirk playing at the corner of his lips. "He’s currently on a red-eye flight to Zurich to reconsider his life choices. You won't be hearing from him again."

Mara looked from the papers up to Adrian’s piercing eyes. The gratitude swelling in her chest was overwhelming, but underneath it was a strange, terrifying realization: her safe, predictable, invisible life was gone forever. She had just been pulled into the orbit of a man who ruled the shadows of New York.

"What do I owe you for this?" she asked, her voice steady, refusing to cower.

Adrian stared at her for a long, silent moment, the wind whipping his dark hair across his forehead.

"Nothing," he said softly. "Ash owes you his life. And I... well, let's just say I’m a man who likes to keep his accounts balanced."

May you like

He reached out, his warm fingers brushing against the back of her hand as he took the manila envelope back and tucked it securely under her arm. "Get some sleep, Mara. Vance will be stationed downstairs starting today. Not as a guard—just as a precaution."

Before she could argue, the window rolled up smoothly, and the Mercedes glided away into the morning mist, leaving her standing alone on the sidewalk with the cold wind and a new life.
