Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionThe house fell into a heavy, suffocating silence around midnight. Sarah was fast asleep in her bedroom down the hall, completely dead to the world after a grueling sixteen-hour shift. I sat rigid in the rocking chair beside Leo's bed, gently stroking his damp hair as he slept fitfully.

A soft creak of the floorboards made my breath catch.

Marcus stepped into the dimly lit bedroom, silhouette cutting a menacing figure against the hallway light. He didn't make a sound as he approached the bed, looking down at the sleeping boy with an expression of detached curiosity.

"He has your eyes, you know," Marcus whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Too bad he has your stubborn streak, too. Most kids would have stayed quiet after the first warning."

"What do you want, Marcus?" I whispered back, my voice laced with venom and exhaustion. "Money? The house? Name your price and leave us alone."

Marcus let out a low, mocking chuckle. "Money? Evelyn, look at me. Do I look like a man who cares about mortgages and retirement funds? I don't want your money. I want your total, absolute submission. I want to watch this perfect little family rot from the inside out, piece by piece, until there is nothing left but obedience."

"You're insane," I hissed, glaring at him with every ounce of hatred I possessed.

"Insane?" Marcus leaned down, his face inches from mine, his eyes gleaming with a terrifying madness. "No, Evelyn. I'm precise. And tomorrow, the real fun begins. Because your daughter is going to give me power of attorney over the household finances, and you are going to smile and hand it to me on a silver platter."
