Chapter 5 - The Web TightensMorning arrived with a gray, unforgiving light that matched the despair gnawing at my soul. By breakfast, Marcus was already playing the picture-perfect partner, setting out pancakes and fresh coffee as if he hadn't threatened our lives just hours before.

Sarah looked happier than I had seen her in months, completely manipulated by his daily routine of manufactured kindness.
"Mom, Marcus and I were talking last night," Sarah said brightly, buttering a piece of toast. "Since he's practically running household operations now, we decided it makes sense to streamline things. Marcus offered to handle the bank accounts and pay the property taxes so I can focus entirely on my work at the hospital."
My stomach plummeted into an abyss. I looked across the table at Marcus. He was sitting calmly, sliding a formal legal document across the table toward me. A golden pen rested neatly on top of it.
"Here are the authorization papers, Evelyn," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes flashing with a silent warning. "Just sign on the dotted line, and we can all move forward as a happy family."
Sarah looked between us, tilting her head in confusion. "Mom? Is something wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Every fiber of my being screamed at me to rip the papers to shreds, to scream the truth, to expose the monster sitting at our table. But then I caught the subtle twitch of Marcus's hand near his pocket—where I knew a second, deadlier vial of poison was likely waiting. Leo sat silently beside me, his small hand trembling as he gripped his empty cup, looking up at me with eyes that begged for survival.

I was trapped in a checkmate.
Slowly, with hands that shook uncontrollably, I reached for the golden pen.
