Chapter 6 - The Crack in the ArmorThe ink of my signature felt like poison sinking into the paper. The moment I lifted the pen, Marcus snatched the folder back with a triumphant gleam in his eye. He had what he wanted—legal control over the house, our savings, and our lives.

With Sarah back at the hospital, the mask came off entirely.
"Smart girl, Evelyn," Marcus sneered, tossing the folder onto the counter. He walked over to the refrigerator, pulling out a fresh carton of juice. "Now, why don't you take Leo upstairs and keep him out of my way while I pack up the study? Things are going to change around here very quickly."
As we walked up the stairs, Leo tugged weakly on my sleeve. His voice was barely a breath, but it carried a revelation that stopped my heart.
"Grandma... I found his bag," Leo whispered, his wide eyes filled with terror.
"What bag, sweetie?" I asked, pulling him into the safety of my bedroom and locking the heavy wooden door behind us.
"In the garage, behind the old workbench," Leo shuddered, tears welling in his eyes. "When he was out fixing the lawnmower last week, I went looking for my baseball glove. There was a black leather case. I opened it. It had... it had pictures. Lots of pictures of other families. And newspaper clippings."
My breath hitched. "Newspaper clippings about what, Leo?"

"About houses that burned down," Leo sobbed, burying his face in my apron. "Families that disappeared. And in every picture... Marcus was standing outside smiling, just like he smiles at us."
The chilling reality crashed over me with staggering force. Marcus wasn't just a cruel manipulator or a domestic abuser. He was a professional predator—a con man who targeted vulnerable single mothers, wormed his way into their homes, systematically isolated them, and then eliminated them for their assets. And we had just handed him the keys to the kingdom.
