Chapter 15 - Shadows on the Sound

Winter yielded slowly to an early spring thaw, turning the lawns of Hawthorne House a vibrant, stubborn green.
The winter garden restoration was finally complete. Standing on the newly paved stone terrace, I watched sunlight filter through the triple-paned glass roof, illuminating rows of exotic ferns, orchids, and blossoming citrus trees. It was a masterpiece of modern engineering wrapped in historic elegance—a testament to what happens when you build something designed to endure.
Marcus stepped out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to me, his fingers brushing mine with a quiet, grounding warmth.
"It’s incredible," he said, looking around the glass pavilion. "Even better than the blueprints."
"Because it has a real foundation," I replied, taking a sip.
Marcus smiled, leaning against the stone balustrade next to me. "You know, when I first met you at the historical society gala, I thought you were just a very polished woman guarding a very expensive house."
"And now?"
"Now I realize you're the storm that cleared out the old neighborhood." He turned to face me, his expression softening. "Are you ever going to let go of the past, Lena, or are you going to keep living like a general inspecting her borders?"

I looked out over the Long Island Sound, where the waves caught the afternoon sun like scattered diamonds. For five years, I had believed that love meant standing beside someone while they destroyed everything around them. I had spent months fighting a war to reclaim what was mine. But looking at the glass pavilion, at the thriving garden, and at the man standing beside me who asked for nothing and offered everything, I realized the war was already over.
"I’m not guarding borders anymore, Marcus," I said softly. "I’m just enjoying the view."
