Chapter 5 - Ambush at the GalaTwo days after submitting the SEC report, the annual County Business Leaders Gala was held at the Grand Harbor Hotel—a high-society event where my father was scheduled to receive the "Philanthropist of the Year" award for his four decades of community leadership.

Ryan and Megan were there, wearing expensive designer clothes bought with money stolen from my mother's trust, parading around like royalty. Richard was also present, sitting at Dad’s VIP table as a honored corporate sponsor.

They thought they were untouchable. They thought my restraining order was just a minor legal annoyance they could drag out in court for months while continuing their lives as local elites.

They didn't know I had bought a ticket to the gala three weeks prior under my middle name.

At 8:30 PM, the lights in the grand ballroom dimmed. The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.

"And now, ladies and gentlemen," the MC announced to applause, "we honor a man who embodies family values, community integrity, and selfless devotion—Mr. Arthur Sterling!"

Dad stood up, straightening his tuxedo button, accepting the applause with a benevolent smile. Ryan clapped enthusiastically, while Megan took photos on her phone.

As Dad walked up the steps to the stage, the massive projector screens behind the podium—meant to display a slideshow of Dad's charitable work—suddenly flickered and went dark.

The crowd quieted down.

A loud chime echoed through the auditorium speakers.

The projector screens flashed back on, but instead of pictures of Dad cutting ribbons at charity events, a massive high-definition document appeared on the thirty-foot screen.

It was an official Federal Subpoena issued by the United States District Court, naming Arthur Sterling, Ryan Sterling, Megan Sterling, and Richard Vance in a twenty-count indictment for Wire Fraud, Grand Larceny, and Money Laundering.

Gasps rippled through the audience of three hundred people.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Dad bellowed, turning toward the AV booth. "Turn that off immediately!"

The screen changed again. This time, it displayed a clear, high-resolution scan of my mother's trust fund signature, side-by-side with a handwriting analysis report from the FBI Forensic Laboratory, stamped in bold red letters: EVIDENCE OF FORGERY.

I stood up from a table in the back of the room, wearing an elegant emerald-green silk dress. The room went dead silent as I slowly walked down the central aisle toward the stage, my footsteps clicking rhythmically on the polished marble floor.

"Claire!" Ryan snarled, his face contorting in rage as he tried to rush toward me, only to be grabbed by two heavy-set security guards who had entered from the side doors. "You insane psycho! What did you do?!"

I stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at my father, whose face had gone completely pale. The benevolent patriarch had disappeared; in his place stood a terrified old man whose carefully constructed life of lies was collapsing around him in real time.

"You told me Mom would have expected me to share, Dad," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the microphone clipped to my collar, broadcasting across the silent room. "So I decided to share everything you, Ryan, and Megan have been doing with the federal government."
