Chapter 6 - The Fall of the PatriarchThe chaos that erupts when a powerful man falls is never quiet.

Within ten minutes of my entrance at the gala, federal marshals and IRS criminal investigators stepped into the ballroom. They didn't just arrest Dad—they arrested Richard Vance right at his table, handcuffing him as his wife screamed in shock.
Ryan tried to run out through the kitchen exit, but Deputy Miller was waiting for him in the hallway. Ryan was thrown against the stainless-steel prep counter, cuffed, and dragged back through the lobby in full view of the local news crews that had gathered outside.
Megan broke down instantly. The moment the federal agents placed her under arrest, her icy composure evaporated. She began sobbing hysterically, pointing her finger directly at Ryan and Dad.
"It wasn't me!" Megan screamed, her voice echoing through the hotel lobby. "It was Arthur’s idea! He showed us how to forge the estate papers! Ryan told me Claire was too weak to ever fight back! They forced me to set up the LLCs!"
"Shut up, Megan!" Ryan roared as he was loaded into the back of a police cruiser. "Shut your damn mouth!"
"He made me do it!" Megan shrieked, turning to the federal agent. "I have the text messages! Arthur has a secret offshore account in the Caymans! He’s been hiding money from Mom's estate there since 2021!"
Sitting in the backseat of the second police car, my father sat motionless. He didn't look at Ryan. He didn't look at Megan. He looked through the tinted window straight at me.
There was no warmth, no regret, no parental love in his eyes—only the cold, bitter realization that the daughter he had spent a lifetime dismissing had played him into a checkmate.
By midnight, all four of them were locked in county holding cells, denied bail pending a formal federal arraignment.
Marcus Vance met me on the front steps of the hotel as the police cars drove away, light sirens flashing against the night sky.
"Well, Claire," Marcus said, handing me a fresh cup of warm tea. "The federal prosecutors are taking over the case. Between the estate fraud, the corporate kickbacks, and Megan's counterfeit operation, your father and brother are looking at fifteen to twenty years in federal prison."
"And my mother's trust?" I asked softly.
"The court has ordered an immediate freeze on all of Arthur's assets, including his home and his offshore accounts," Marcus smiled warmly. "Every penny stolen from your mother's trust—plus interest and damages—will be fully restored to you."
I should have felt triumphant. I should have felt complete relief.
But as I looked at the moonlit sky, a cold feeling settled in my chest. Something was still missing.

Why had Dad been so hyper-fixated on my lake house?
Even if he wanted to hide his crimes, buying a property anywhere else would have been easier than trying to forcibly take a house I owned. Why this specific parcel of land? Why Lake Serenity?
