Chapter 5 - THE RACE AGAINST TIMEThe digital clock red-lined: 02:45... 02:44...

Samuel’s tactical brain raced. Victor was playing him, using his age-old instinct to protect the innocent as a distraction.
"Cross, do you have a line on the uplink?" Samuel barked into his comm-link while maintaining his defensive stance against Victor.
"Negative, Commander! The signal is heavily encrypted through the coin's key. You need to physically insert the Level 0 coin into the terminal to override the upload!" Cross replied over the static.
Victor lunged again, targeting Samuel’s vulnerable organic leg. The blade slashed through Samuel's jacket, leaving a shallow red streak. Samuel gritted his teeth, absorbing the pain, and swept his titanium leg around in a low kick, catching Victor behind the knee and bringing the younger brother to his joint.
"You're out of practice, Sarge!" Victor roared, driving an elbow into Samuel's ribs and breaking free. He darted toward the zip-tied boy, grabbing Jax by the hair and pulling his head back, holding a knife to his throat. "Drop your weapon, or I slit his neck right now!"
Jax wept uncontrollably. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry for what I said at the bus stop! Please don't let him kill me!"
Samuel slowly lowered his pistol, placing it on the ground. "Jax, listen to me," Samuel said with eerie calm. "Remember the cap I gave you?"
Jax gasped through his tears. "Y-yes!"
"What's written on the inside seam?"
"A... a number! 4-7-9-1!" Jax blurted out.
Victor’s eyes widened in sudden realization. The coin wasn't the activation key—it was a decoy! The real override code had been embroidered into the lining of the veteran cap Samuel had tossed to the kid hours ago!

"You clever bastard," Victor growled, raising his knife to strike.
Before the blade could fall, Samuel triggered his exoskeleton’s emergency burst mode. The hydraulic piston on his prosthetic leg compressed and fired like a cannon, propelling him across the room in a split second. He slammed into Victor with the force of a speeding car, throwing both of them through the wooden railings and into the freezing black waters of the harbor below.
