Chapter 1 - THE IGNITION OF REVENGEThe laughter echoed off the wet asphalt, sharp and cruel. The ringleader of the trio, a tall kid in a neon-green hoodie and a backward cap, stepped so close to the old man that the toe of his pristine sneaker almost brushed against the scuffed metal of the mechanical joint.

"Hey, gramps! I asked you a question," Neon-Hoodie sneered, pulling out his phone to record. "Are you deaf as well as broken? Wave to the camera! Let the internet see the bionic grandpa!"

The old man, whose name was Samuel "Sarge" Vance, didn't flinch. His eyes—a faded, icy blue forged in the humid hellscapes of forgotten jungle combat—remained locked on the approaching headlights of a dark sedan down the street. It wasn't the bus. It was a slick, black SUV with tinted windows that had been tailing the three troublemakers for the last two blocks without them even noticing.

"Leave him alone, man, he's gonna cry," the second kid snickered, reaching out to tap Samuel’s cap.

Before his fingers could touch the faded "Veteran" embroidery, Samuel’s hand moved.

It wasn't the slow, shaky movement of a frail seventy-year-old. It was a blur.

SNAP.

Samuel grabbed the kid’s wrist with a grip like a hydraulic vise. The laughter died instantly. The kid gasped, his face twisting in sudden, sharp pain as Samuel applied precise pressure to a nerve bundle in his forearm.

"What the hell?! Let go of him!" Neon-Hoodie yelled, stepping forward aggressively.

Samuel didn't let go. Instead, he slowly stood up. His posture straightened, revealing a broad, towering frame hidden beneath the baggy jacket. Even on one real leg and one titanium alloy substitute, he towered over the teenagers.

"You boys think this leg makes me weak?" Samuel’s voice was low, like gravel grinding in a concrete mixer. "You think the government gave me this piece of metal because I got hurt?"

He released the kid’s wrist, sending him stumbling back onto the wet pavement.

"This isn't a disability," Samuel whispered, leaning in close to Neon-Hoodie, whose cocky smile had completely vanished. "It's a keepsake from a war you aren't brave enough to even read about."

Suddenly, the black SUV pulled up to the curb, splashing rainwater over the sidewalk. The rear door slid open automatically.

Two men in dark tailored suits stepped out. They didn't look like muggers, and they certainly didn't look like cops. They had tactical earpieces, scarred knuckles, and the sharp, dangerous aura of high-level military contractors.

The three teenagers froze, their phones lowering.

The suited men completely ignored the boys. They walked straight to Samuel, stopped, and snapped into a crisp, rigid salute.

"Commander Vance," the lead agent said, his voice cut through the cold air. "The Director sent us. The protocol has been breached. They found the vault... and he is awake."

Samuel’s eyes narrowed. The quiet, tragic old man who had been sitting at the bus stop vanished completely. In his place stood a high-ranking tactical legend who had been hiding in plain sight for fifteen years.

Samuel reached into his old jacket, pulled off the worn cap, and tossed it to Neon-Hoodie. The kid caught it reflexively, his hands trembling.

"Keep it," Samuel said coldly. "You're going to need something to remind you of the world you used to live in before tonight."

Samuel stepped into the back of the armored SUV. The door slammed shut, and the vehicle roared away, disappearing into the dark, rain-drenched city.

The three boys stood stunned under the flickering streetlights. Neon-Hoodie looked down at the cap in his hands. Tucked inside the inner band was a small, heavy silver coin stamped with a terrifying crest: BLACK SPIRE—LEVEL 0 CLEARANCE.

Then, Neon-Hoodie’s phone buzzed. A text message popped up on his screen from an unknown, encrypted number:
