Chapter 4 - THE RETURN OF THE GHOSTMaria felt the ground tilt beneath her feet. "Daniel?"

The man who had abandoned her four years ago, who had left her alone in a hospital bed with a newborn child and a mountain of debt, was standing fifty feet away. But he didn't look like a desperate runaway. He was wearing an expensive leather jacket, gold watch, and carried himself with an arrogant smirk.

"Hello, Maria," Daniel said, his voice dripping with condescension. "Imagine my surprise when I saw my little girl going viral on TikTok while I was sitting in a bar downtown. 'The Million-Dollar Maid’s Daughter.'"

He walked slowly toward them, his eyes gleaming with greed as he looked around the opulent ballroom. "You've been keeping secrets from me, sweetie. You never told me you were living in a billionaire's mansion."

Richard stepped firmly in front of Maria and Lily, blocking Daniel’s path. His tall, imposing frame towered over the intruder. "Who let this man onto my property?"

"I don't need permission to see my own family, Calloway," Daniel sneered, pulling a laminated document from his jacket. "I’m her legal father. And I just heard you promise a million dollars to my daughter."

"You abandoned us!" Maria screamed, her voice shaking with years of buried agony and rage. "You stole my life savings! You left a note on the kitchen counter and disappeared when Lily was barely a year old!"

"A minor misunderstanding, babe," Daniel chuckled casually, taking a step closer. "I was pursuing business opportunities. But under South Carolina law, we are still legally married. I never signed divorce papers. Which means any financial settlement, any trust fund, or any earnings made by my minor daughter... belongs to both of us. Fifty-fifty."

Richard’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "You have five seconds to turn around and walk out of this house before my security team throws you into the harbor."

Daniel didn't flinch. Instead, he pulled out his phone and turned the screen toward Richard. "Go ahead. Call security. But if you touch me, these photos go directly to the press and the police."

On the screen was a photograph of a legal contract bearing the official stamp of Calloway Urban Development, signed by Richard’s late father twenty years ago—and beside it, a photograph of Daniel’s father.

"My family used to own the land your prized waterfront tower is built on, Calloway," Daniel said, his smile turning deadly sharp. "Your father cheated mine out of the mineral rights back in 2004. I didn't just marry Maria by accident. I’ve been keeping tabs on your family for a long time. Now, you’re going to pay me what your father owed mine—or I’ll take my daughter, file for full custody based on Maria's poverty, and drag your company through a public trial that will destroy your stock value overnight."

Maria gasped, clutching Lily so tightly the little girl whimpered softly. "You monster... you wouldn't take her from me!"

"Try me, Maria," Daniel hissed. "I have a lawyer on retainer, and you're a homeless maid living above a laundromat."

Richard didn't move a muscle. His breathing remained slow and calm, but those who knew him best knew this was the calm before a catastrophic storm.

"Arthur," Richard spoke quietly without turning his head.

"Yes, Mr. Calloway?"

"Call legal. Tell Marcus to get off his plane in Atlanta and take the first private jet back to Charleston."

Richard looked Daniel directly in the eyes. "You think you walked into a trap to catch me, Daniel. But you just walked into my home. And nobody threatens a child in my home."
