Chapter 6 - THE SPIDER’S WEBThe conspiracy unravelled rapidly over the next three hours.

Through deep forensic banking checks, Marcus discovered that Vanessa Cole’s lifestyle brand was massively in debt. To save herself from bankruptcy before her wedding to Richard, she had struck a secret deal with an offshore shell company. That shell company was managed by none other than Daniel Delgado.
Daniel had used Vanessa’s influence to target Richard’s real estate assets, intending to use the wedding to quietly funnel stolen capital through Calloway Urban Development.
Lily’s accidental appearance in the ballroom, and the viral video of Vanessa’s cruelty, had threatened to ruin their entire scheme. Daniel had rushed into the mansion to salvage what he could by using his daughter as a human bargaining chip.
"They set you up, Richard," Marcus stated plainly. "Vanessa was never going to be your wife. She was the Trojan horse."
Richard stood up, his jaw set like iron. "Where is Vanessa now?"
"She checked into the downtown Ritz-Carlton," Marcus replied, checking his tablet. "And according to location tracking on her private driver's vehicle, Daniel Delgado just entered her suite fifteen minutes ago."
Maria stood up, her hands trembling. "What are we going to do?"
Richard turned to Maria. His eyes were no longer those of a weary businessman; they were the eyes of a master strategist entering a war.
"We are going to give them exactly what they want," Richard said coldly. "They want a public spectacle. They want money. They want a scandal."
He walked over to the desk, pulled out a thick, leather-bound document, and opened it. Inside was an invitation to the annual Charleston Heritage Gala—the most prestigious, heavily televised charity event of the year, scheduled to take place at the historic Dock Street Theatre the very next evening.
"Vanessa was supposed to be my co-host tomorrow night," Richard said, a dark smirk playing on his lips. "She thinks she’s ruined my reputation. She thinks she has the upper hand. Tomorrow night, the entire state of South Carolina will be watching."
He looked at Maria. "Can you still dance?"
Maria blinked, startled. "What?"
"I don't mean for fun in a living room, Maria," Richard said, his voice filled with an intense, burning belief. "I mean the way you danced when you won that scholarship. The way my mother saw you dance eleven years ago."
"I... I haven't performed on a real stage in eight years," Maria stammered, looking at her calloused hands. "My body... my spirit... I'm broken, Richard."
"You are not broken," Richard said softly, taking her hands in his. "You were just waiting for a reason to fight. Tomorrow night, you and Lily are going to perform the opening act at the Heritage Gala. We are going to show the world who you really are."

"And what about Daniel and Vanessa?" Maria asked, her heart pounding.
"By the time the curtain falls," Richard promised, "they will both be in handcuffs."
