Chapter 5 - DANCE OF SHADOWSBy 2:00 AM, the mansion had fallen quiet, but light burned bright in Richard’s private library.

Maria sat on a velvet armchair, holding a steaming cup of tea she hadn't touched. Lily was fast asleep on the plush sofa beside her, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, her tiny hand still holding her plush rabbit.

Richard stood at his grand oak desk, staring at three monitors displaying legal archives, corporate registries, and police reports from across the country. Across the desk sat Marcus Vance, Richard’s ruthless head legal counsel, who had arrived via private helicopter thirty minutes prior.

"Daniel Delgado is telling the truth about one thing," Marcus said, laying out a stack of financial documents. "He and Maria are still legally married. Because Maria never filed for a formal divorce due to lack of funds, Daniel retains parental rights. If he files an emergency custody petition tomorrow morning claiming Maria's living conditions above the laundromat are unsafe, a conservative judge might temporarily grant him joint custody—or force a financial settlement."

Maria choked back a sob. "I'll give him everything. I don't care about the million dollars! I don't care about anything! Just don't let him take Lily!"

"He doesn't want Lily, Maria," Richard said, his voice quiet but intense. "He wants leverage. He wants money, and he wants to settle an old score with my family."

Richard walked over and sat on the coffee table directly in front of Maria. He looked into her terrified eyes. "Do you trust me, Maria?"

Maria looked at the billionaire. Twenty-four hours ago, he was a stranger who didn't even know her name. Now, he was standing like an impenetrable wall between her daughter and a predator.

"Why are you doing this?" Maria whispered, tears running down her cheeks. "I'm just a maid. You don't owe us anything."

"My mother built this house on love, art, and truth," Richard said softly, reaching out to gently wipe a tear from her cheek. "After she died, I turned it into a cold, transactional business. Seeing your daughter dance tonight... seeing the way you protected her... it reminded me of who I used to be before I let money consume me. I am not letting Daniel destroy your life. And I am certainly not letting him touch Lily."

Marcus cleared his throat, holding up a black folder. "There is one vulnerability in Daniel's plan. He thinks he’s clever, but he made a massive mistake three years ago in Miami."

Richard leaned forward. "What did you find?"

"Daniel didn't just vanish," Marcus revealed, a cold smile spreading across his face. "He ran a luxury sports car leasing scam in Florida under a fake identity. He stole three hundred thousand dollars from a high-profile cartel front organization. They've been looking for him ever since."

Maria gasped. "He's involved with criminals?"

"He is a criminal," Marcus corrected. "And guess who just invested five million dollars into Vanessa Cole's lifestyle brand last week? The very same offshore holding company connected to those Miami investors."

A sudden, sharp realization struck Richard like a lightning bolt.

"Vanessa," Richard murmured, his eyes widening. "Daniel didn't just show up tonight because of a TikTok video. He was already connected to Vanessa."
