Chapter 2 - The Miami Mirage

Three thousand miles away, in a penthouse suite overlooking South Beach, Brent Miller poured himself a glass of twenty-year-old scotch.

The tropical air was thick and sweet, a sharp contrast to the dreary, rain-soaked mountains of Colorado he had left behind. Sitting across from him on the terrace, clad in a silk kaftan and dripping in freshwater pearls, was his mother, Diane.

"Are you sure she won't call the police, Brent?" Diane asked, taking a delicate sip of her mimosa. "Tessa can be... aggressive when she doesn't get her way."

"What police?" Brent chuckled, leaning back into the outdoor sofa. "We’re married, Mother. In the eyes of the law, a husband changing a door code during a domestic dispute is a civil matter. Besides, she’s three days post-partum. She’s bleeding, she’s hormonal, and she’s terrified. She’ll run to Molly, cry for three days, and then she’ll realize she needs me to run that giant, empty house."

"And the funds?" Diane pressed, her eyes glittering with greed. "Did the wire go through?"

Brent pulled out his phone, checking his banking app with a smug smile. "Pending authorization. It will clear by Thursday morning. Two million clean dollars. We pay off the developers in Tampa, clear your foundation’s audit, and we still have enough left over to buy the boat."

Diane let out a sigh of profound relief. "I always knew you were smarter than her, my boy. She might have the tech millions, but she lacks... pedigree. She lacks finesse. She actually thought she could hold that estate over our heads forever."

"She’s weak, Mom," Brent said, swirling his scotch. "Women like Tessa think money makes them powerful. But when you break their spirit, the money becomes yours anyway."

Suddenly, Brent’s phone vibrated in his hand.

It wasn't a text from Tessa. It wasn't a hysterical voicemail begging him to come home and let her into the warmth.

It was an automated notification from the Pitkin County Clerk’s Office.

PROPERTY TRANSFER FILED: 1024 REDWOOD CREST DR. STATUS: PENDING EXPEDITED CLOSING.

Brent frowned, his thumb hovering over the screen. "That’s strange."

"What is it?" Diane asked, her tone sharpening instantly.

"It’s an automated alert," Brent muttered, sitting up straight. "It says there’s a title transfer pending on the Boulder house."

"That’s impossible," Diane scoffed. "You need a signature from both spouses to sell a matrimonial home!"

"Unless..." Brent’s face went pale. He tapped frantically on his phone, dialing his corporate lawyer. "Pick up, legal... pick up!"

"Brent, what's going on?" Diane stood up, her kaftan fluttering in the sea breeze.

"She didn't cry," Brent whispered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the glass. "She didn't call the police. Mom... she’s selling the house right now."
