Chapter 8 - The Queen's Throne

The afternoon sun beamed brightly over the sweeping lawn of 1024 Redwood Crest Drive.
The dark energy that had once hung over the estate was completely gone. The cheap portraits of the Miller family had been burned in a bonfire three weeks ago. The gaudy decorations were replaced with sleek, modern artwork and warm family photos of Molly, Ivy, and me.
A grand garden party was in full swing on the back patio. Friends, true allies, and corporate executives gathered to celebrate Ivy’s two-month milestone and the launch of my new venture capital firm—Vance & Daughter Enterprises.
Molly walked up to me, holding a sleeping Ivy in her arms.
"How does it feel to be back?" Molly asked, handing me my daughter.
I looked out over the lush green grass, down toward the grand entrance where, just weeks ago, I had been standing in the pouring rain, abandoned and broken.
"It feels different," I said, kissing Ivy’s soft forehead. "When I bought this place years ago, I thought it was a symbol of my success. But now I realize... a house is just stone and mortar. The real fortress is the people who stand by you when the rain starts falling."
Molly smiled, wrapping her arm around my shoulders. "And what about Brent?"
"Brent is right where he belongs," I said calmly. "In a small cell, with plenty of time to think about the door code he changed."
My phone chimed in my pocket. It was a news alert from the Denver Post:
MILLER FOUNDATION ASSETS LIQUIDATED AT AUCTION; ALL PROCEEDS DIRECTED TO VICTIMS OF FRAUD.
I turned off the screen, slipped the phone back into my pocket, and raised my glass to the sun.
I had built my empire from nothing once before. They thought they could strip me of my home, my dignity, and my peace. But they forgot the most dangerous thing about a woman who has built everything with her own hands:
