Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unveiled

One month later.

I stood on the glass balcony of a brand-new penthouse apartment in downtown Denver. The skyline sparkled beneath the clear night sky, grand and unburdened by the painful memories of Redwood Crest.

Jennifer walked out onto the balcony, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. She handed one to me and leaned against the railing.

"The plea bargains were finalized this morning," Jennifer reported. "Brent got four years in federal prison. Diane was sentenced to seven for her role in the non-profit fraud. Karen received three years of strict probation and eight hundred hours of community service."

"And the buyer of the house?" I asked, sipping my cider.

Jennifer smiled—a sharp, mysterious smile that I hadn't seen before.

"The deed transfer was completed yesterday. Vanguard Holdings LLC officially took possession."

"Good," I sighed. "I’m glad that place belongs to someone else now. I never want to see it again."

"Well," Jennifer said softly, pulling a white envelope from her coat pocket, "the actual owner of Vanguard Holdings asked me to give you this."

I frowned, taking the envelope. "Who is the owner? Elliot said it was an anonymous foreign investor."

"Read the letter, Tessa."

I opened the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper. Written in elegant, familiar handwriting were four simple words:

Welcome home, little sister.

I froze. My breath caught in my throat.

"Molly?" I whispered, looking up at Jennifer in complete disbelief.

"Molly sold her tech startup shares three months ago," Jennifer revealed, her eyes sparkling with pride. "She saw how Brent and his family were treating you. She knew Brent was planning to try to squeeze you out of the estate during your pregnancy. So she created Vanguard Holdings, hired Elliot as a front man, and waited for the right moment."

"She bought the house?" I gasped.

"She bought the house to protect your equity," Jennifer explained. "And yesterday morning, she transferred forty percent of the company shares directly into a irrevocable trust for Ivy. The mansion isn't gone, Tessa. It’s been purged. It’s clean now. It belongs to the women who actually built this life."
