Chapter 5 - The Trap Within the Trap

The words hung in the subterranean chill of the parking garage, echoing off the concrete walls like a gunshot.
Victoria froze. She stared up at her father, her breath hitching in her throat as the sheer, staggering magnitude of his words began to settle over her.
“You... you placed the ad?” Victoria whispered, her hands dropping from his coat. “What are you talking about, Daddy? The death threat... the forty thousand dollars... the hitman...”
“Was a honeypot,” a smooth, gravelly voice echoed from the shadows behind them.
Victoria and Keller spun around. Emerging from behind a concrete pillar was a man wearing a dark tactical jacket and a silver scar across his jawline—the exact man whose face had flashed on the security monitors minutes earlier. He was holding a secure satellite phone, its screen glowing with encrypted bank routing numbers.
“Allow me to introduce myself, Mrs. Hammond,” the man said with a slight, respectful nod. “Agent Vance, formerly of federal intelligence, currently running private security audits for Sterling Global.”
Keller exhaled a long, slow breath, a slow smirk spreading across his scarred face. “You set up the contract yourself, Mr. Sterling.”
“Every single word of it,” William said, his voice returning to its cool, calculated timber as he stepped beside his daughter. He gestured to the leather briefcase lying on the concrete. “Marcus thought he was hiring a high-end underworld cleaner to make his pregnant wife disappear. In reality, he was interacting with an encrypted shell corporation owned and operated by my financial intelligence division.”
Victoria’s mind spun. “You... you set a trap for him? You knew he would take the bait?”
“Marcus is predictable, Tori,” William said, his eyes hardening into flint. “Men built on greed and cowardice always take the shortest path to self-preservation. When his affair with Sloan Carmichael started draining his personal accounts, and when your pregnancy threatened to tie his name to your inheritance permanently, I knew what he was capable of. I just needed him to make a move big enough to put him away for the rest of his natural life—without leaving a single legal loophole for his defense attorneys.”
Victoria touched her stomach, feeling the baby give a gentle, reassuring kick. All the paranoia, all the sleepless nights, all the suffocating fear of the past four months—it hadn't been her postpartum hormones acting up. It had been a war fought in the dark between a predatory husband and a protective father.
“He poisoned my vitamins,” Victoria said quietly, her voice trembling with a cold, rising fury. “Every morning. He wanted it to look like natural pregnancy failure.”
William’s face darkened into an expression of pure, unadulterated menace. The billionaire philanthropist vanished entirely, replaced by the ruthless patriarch who had built an empire by burying his enemies alive.
“He won't have the chance to finish the job,” William said softly. He turned to Vance. “Where is he now?”
“Secured in the rear transport unit,” Vance reported crisply. “We intercepted his secondary burner phone. He was trying to wire fifty thousand dollars to an offshore account in the Caymans to pay off Sloan Carmichael and skip the country before sunrise.”
“Too late for that,” William said, turning back to his daughter. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, notarized document bearing the seal of the state supreme court. “The moment Marcus signed that hitman contract online using his IP address and verified corporate credit card, every asset, trust, and property he ever touched legally reverted to your name, Tori. As of four minutes ago, Marcus Hammond is legally bankrupt, criminally indicted for conspiracy to commit murder, and entirely erased from the Sterling registry.”
Victoria looked down at the document in her father's hand. The fear that had gripped her chest at 3:07 in the morning was gone, replaced by a fierce, blazing clarity.
“I want to see him,” Victoria said softly.

William studied her face for a long moment, searching for hesitation. Finding none, he nodded once.
“Bring him in,” William commanded Vance.
