Chapter 6 - Confession in the Dark

The back of the armored security van was windowless, lit only by a dim, flickering overhead LED strip that cast long, sickly shadows across the reinforced steel walls.

Marcus Hammond sat slumped on a metal bench, his hands bound behind his back with industrial zip-ties, his expensive silk bathrobe stained with dust and sweat. The arrogant, untouchable real estate mogul who had ruled his household with a gentle, manipulative smile was completely gone. In his place was a shivering, hollowed-out shell of a man staring blankly at the floor.

The heavy steel doors swung open with a loud, metallic clatter.

Daylight was just beginning to break over the city skyline, casting a pale, cold stripe of grey light across the floor of the van.

Victoria stepped up into the vehicle, followed closely by her father and Keller.

Marcus jerked his head up at the sound of footsteps. When his bloodshot eyes landed on Victoria—radiant, defiant, and standing tall despite her heavy pregnancy—his breath hitched in a ragged gasp.

“Tori...” he whimpered, his voice cracking pathetically. “Tori, please. You have to listen to me. It was a mistake. Sloan... Sloan forced me into it! She threatened to expose my company! I never wanted to hurt you, I swear to God—”

Victoria stopped two feet away from him. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't yell. She simply looked down at the man she had loved for seven years, marveling at how blind she had been to the absolute emptiness inside him.

“You signed the contract at 2:14 in the morning, Marcus,” Victoria said, her voice cutting through his pleas like a scalpel. “While I was sleeping next to you. While our daughter was kicking against my ribs.”

Marcus swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. “The... the messages... how did you...”

“Did you really think my father wouldn't protect what’s his?” Victoria asked softly.

Marcus’s head snapped toward William Sterling, who stood silently in the doorway of the van, arms crossed over his chest, his ice-blue eyes fixed on the man like a predator examining a pinned insect.

“You...” Marcus hissed, sudden venom flashing through his terror. “You set me up! This was all a trap! You engineered the whole thing!”

“I built the road, Marcus,” William said, his voice smooth and cold as glacier ice. “You’re the one who drove your car off the cliff at full speed. Every transaction, every message, every poisoned dose of vitamins you slipped into her morning cup—it’s all backed by digital forensics, chemical assays, and federal warrants.”

Marcus slumped forward, his forehead hitting his knees as the final, crushing weight of reality crashed down upon him. There were no lawyers to call. No loopholes to exploit. No charming smiles that could talk his way out of a federal conspiracy charge with a multi-billionaire prosecutor standing judge, jury, and executioner.

“What... what happens to me now?” Marcus whispered into the floorboards.

Victoria stepped closer, leaning down so her voice was the only thing he could hear in the confined space of the van.

“You’re going to federal prison for the rest of your natural life,” Victoria said quietly. “And when our daughter is born, she will never know your name, she will never see your face, and she will never carry your shame.”

Before Marcus could utter another word, Keller and Vance stepped into the van, hauling him roughly to his feet.

As they dragged him out into the cold morning air toward an unmarked federal transport vehicle waiting in the shadows of the parking garage, Victoria turned back to her father.

William wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side as the first warm rays of the morning sun finally broke over the horizon, washing the dark concrete in a brilliant, golden light.
