CHAPTER 6 – The Child Who Pressed the Final Button

The countdown echoed through every room of the Harrington Estate.
Smoke began pouring from cracks in the walls.
Crystal chandeliers swayed overhead.
Sophia wrapped both arms around Lily.
"We have to get out!"
Nathan grabbed Emma's hand despite the chains still hanging from his wrists.
"There's an escape tunnel beneath the wine cellar."
Ethan laughed.
"You really think I'd leave you a way out?"

Just as everyone braced for the explosion...
The countdown suddenly stopped.
1...
...
Nothing.
Silence.
Even Ethan looked confused.
His eyes darted to the remote in his hand.
"It... it should have exploded."
A tiny voice came from behind him.
"I changed it."
Everyone turned.
Little Lily stood beside the mansion's old security panel, clutching another remote.
Ethan's face turned ghost white.
"What did you do?"
Lily swallowed hard.
"Mommy taught me."
"She said if the bad man ever pushed the red button..."
"I had to press the blue one."
Ethan lunged toward her.
"Give it to me!"
But before he could reach her, every steel door inside the mansion slammed shut with a deafening crash.
LOCKDOWN ACTIVATED.
Red emergency lights flooded the hall.
A robotic voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"Emergency Security Protocol Enabled."
"Law enforcement has been notified."
Sophia stared at Emma.
"You knew about this?"
Emma nodded.
"When Nathan built this house, he secretly created a protection system."
"He never told Ethan."
Nathan smiled weakly.
"I designed it in case someone inside the family ever tried to seize the estate by force."
Outside...
The sound of helicopters filled the night sky.
Blue and red lights flashed through the mansion's windows.
Police vehicles surrounded the property from every direction.
Ethan's bodyguards slowly backed away from him.
One after another...
They dropped their weapons onto the marble floor.
"It's over, sir."
"No..."
Ethan whispered.
"It can't end like this."
Then, without warning, he pulled out a hidden handgun and grabbed Lily.
"No one moves!"
He pressed the barrel against the little girl's head.
Sophia screamed.
"Lily!"
Emma collapsed in terror.
Nathan took one cautious step forward.
"Ethan..."
"She's innocent."
Ethan's eyes were wild.
"Innocent?"
"That little girl destroyed everything I spent eight years building!"
Suddenly...
Lily looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She quietly asked,
"Do you remember the lullaby you used to sing?"
Ethan froze.
His hand began to shake.
Lily softly hummed the melody.
The same lullaby Nathan used to sing every night before she was born.
Ethan staggered backward.
"How... do you know that song?"
Emma burst into tears.
"I never told her."
Nathan's face slowly changed.
"No..."
He looked at the birth certificate again.
Then at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
Finally, he whispered the words that changed everything.
"The DNA report..."
"It was forged."
Sophia's heart nearly stopped.
Nathan turned toward Ethan.
"You knew the truth all along."
Ethan closed his eyes.
A single tear rolled down his face.
Then he whispered,
"She isn't your daughter..."
"She's mine."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Emma looked at Ethan in disbelief.
"No..."
"You switched the DNA results."
Ethan nodded.
"I couldn't let Father know I had a child with the woman he wanted Nathan to marry."
Sophia gasped.
Every lie...
Every kidnapping...
Every murder...
Every betrayal...
Had been built to hide one impossible truth.
Lily wasn't the key to the Harrington fortune.
She was Ethan's own daughter.
And he had spent eight years hunting the child he desperately wanted...
May you like
while destroying everyone he claimed to love.
