CHAPTER 3 — The Safehouse Nobody Knew Existed

The yellow ribbon was still tied to the charred motorcycle.
Fresh blood stained its edge.
Mason stared at it for only a second before tearing it free.
Twenty-four hours.
Whoever had taken the little girl wanted him desperate.
Good.
Desperate men stopped following rules.
He didn't wait for the firefighters.
He didn't answer the sheriff's questions.
He climbed onto the only motorcycle that still ran and sped into the darkness.
Only one place came to mind.
An abandoned church hidden high in the Black Ridge Mountains.
Years ago, before Rose disappeared, she had once laughed and said, "If the world ever turns against us... meet me where nobody remembers God."
He had never forgotten.
Two hours later, Mason pushed open the church doors.
Dust floated through broken stained-glass windows.
Everything looked abandoned...
...except one candle.
It was burning.
Someone had been here recently.
He searched every room until he reached the old basement.
There, hidden behind a loose stone wall, he found a steel box.
His hands trembled as he forced it open.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Rose.
The little girl.
Ethan.
Sheriff Brooks.
Lucas.
Bankers.
Judges.
Police captains.
State officials.
Every photo had dates.
Locations.
Secret meetings.
Payments.
Smiles shared between men who publicly claimed they had never met.
This wasn't random corruption.
It was an empire.
At the bottom of the box lay a thick notebook.
The first page read:
IF YOU FOUND THIS... THEY ALREADY HAVE MY DAUGHTER.
Mason's chest tightened.
He flipped to the next page.
Rose had documented everything.
For eight years.
Names.
Routes.
Safe houses.
Bribes.
Disappearances.
And one sentence circled in red ink:
The trafficking ring never ended... it simply bought new uniforms.
Mason felt sick.
Every person he had trusted was listed.
Even members of his own motorcycle club.
Then he reached the final page.
His breathing stopped.
A recent family photograph.
Rose.
The little girl.
And standing beside them...
Lucas.
His older brother.
His arm wrapped protectively around the child.
Across the bottom, Rose had written only six words.
He isn't the villain you think.
Before Mason could understand what that meant...
A shotgun clicked behind him.
"You shouldn't have opened that box."
Mason slowly turned.
Lucas stood in the doorway.
Smoke drifted from behind him.
His face showed no anger.
Only sadness.
"I begged Rose never to involve you."
Then he lowered the shotgun...
...and dropped to one knee.
"Because if you're here...
they already know where we are."
The first bullet shattered the church window before Mason could answer.
Within seconds...
May you like
Gunfire erupted from every direction.
The church had been surrounded.
